MINNEOTA – The eighth ranked Minneota Vikings made quick work of the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks Thursday evening. Playing in front of a homecoming crowd the Vikings defeated the Blackjacks in straight sets.

The Blackjacks scored the first point in the opening set on a Mary Bothun kill. That lead didn’t last long. The Vikings scored four straight points and went onto win the opening set, 25-10.

“Our last couple games we’ve started off slow in that first set,” Minneota coach Hayley Fruin said. “It was really important that we come out tonight focused and get a lead right away. We were able to do that tonight.”

Lydia Sussner led the way for the Vikings with five kills in the first set. Natalee Rolbiecki finished with two kills.

Bothun led the Blackjacks with three kills. Avery Bartunek finished with two kills.

In the second set the Vikings jumped out to a 14-0 lead before the Blackjacks cracked the scoreboard. The Vikings used that strong start to bury the Blackjacks, 25-7.

Sussner and Jennifer Krog both recorded four kills for the Vikings. Lizzy Gillingham chipped in with two kills.

Bothun led the Blackjacks with three kills. Karoline Dahl recorded two kills.

The Blackjacks tallied the first point in the third set, but just like in the first set that lead didn’t last for long. The Vikings went on an 8-0 run to take an 8-1 lead. That strong start propelled the Vikings to a 25-11 victory.

Fruin said she was pleased with how well her team communicated in the back row.

“Everybody was talking in the back row,” Fruin said. “No balls were dropping without effort. Everybody was scrappy, which was nice to see.”

Krog led the Vikings with three kills in the final set. Rolbiecki and Gillingham both recorded two kills.

Bartunek and Dahl both recorded two kills for the Blackjacks.

With the win the Vikings improved to 9-3 overall. This weekend the Vikings will compete in the Midwest Warehouse Tournament in Burnsville.

“This weekend is a big weekend,” Fruin said. “We go up to Burnsville for the Midwest Warehouse Tournament. It’s the same thing, we need to start out strong and not dig ourselves in a hole.”

The Vikings are a young team with just one senior on the roster. Fruin said this weekend will be a big test for her young squad.

“It’s going to be a competitive weekend,” Fruin said. “We are a young team, we only have one senior. I’m hoping we battle hard in each match.”

The loss drops Dawson-Boyd to 3-9. They’ve now lost seven straight after starting the season with a 3-2 record. They’ll be back in action on Tuesday against Russell-Tyler-Ruthton.
