HAMBURG – A pivotal six-run fifth inning propelled the Milroy Irish to an 11-1 victory over Henderson in the first round of the state tournament on Sunday.

The Irish trailed Henderson 1-0 to start the bottom of the fifth and only had one hit before the Irish lineup came alive for six runs on six hits and one Henderson error.

The Irish played small ball to start the bottom of the fifth inning. Anthony Dolan led off the inning with an infield single. The next two batters reached base on bunt singles to load the bases for Dominic Dolan came through with a two-run single to give the Irish a 2-1 lead.

A Henderson throwing error brought in Milroy’s third run of the game and allowed Dolan to advance to third. Parker Lanoue then came through with an RBI single to give the Irish a 4-1 lead.

With one out in the inning the Milroy’s cleanup hitter, Derek Riley hit an RBI single to push the lead to 5-1. Isaac Dolan hit a ball that landed in no man’s land with two outs to give the Irish a 6-1 lead.

The game didn’t get off on the right foot when Milroy’s starting pitcher Cody Mather hit the leadoff man. Mather bounced back by inducing a ground ball for a double play. The Irish went down in order in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the second Mather hit back to back batters to load the bases with one out. The next batter hit a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.

Mather worked a perfect inning in the top of the third to keep Henderson from extending their lead.

Dominic Dolan picked up Milroy’s first hit of the game on an infield single, but Dolan was thrown out trying to steal second base to end the inning.

Mather started the top of the fourth inning by issuing a walk. Mather was able to work around that leadoff walk by recording a pair of strikeouts and getting a pop out.

Henderson led off the top of the fifth inning with back to back singles. A perfectly laid bunt put runners on third and second with just one out in the inning. An intentional walk loaded the bases and it appeared the Tigers were on the cusp of breaking the game open. Mather then induced a groundball and the Irish turned their second double play of the game to get out of the bases-loaded jam.

Following the inning-ending double play the Irish bats came alive for six runs to take a 6-1 lead. Following the big inning Mather and the Irish set down the Tigers in order in the top of the sixth.

Lucas Dolan started the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to put the Irish up 7-1. After back to back infield singles Henderson made a pitching change with runners on third and second with no outs in the inning. Parker Lanoue hit a sac-fly to put the Irish up 8-1 with one out in the bottom of the sixth. The next batter, Tyler Peterson hit a sac-fly to give the Irish a 9-1 lead.

A Dominic Dolan sac-fly in the bottom of the seventh put an end to the game as the Irish picked up an 11-1 victory in seven innings.

With the win the Irish will play Union Hill this Saturday at 5 p.m.
