DAWSON – Alex Swenson is a three-sport star for the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks. He’s the quarterback for the football team. He’s a double-double machine for the Blackjacks on the hardwood. On the diamond he serves as the team’s catcher and also spends time on the mound.

This past spring Swenson hit an impressive .386, including six doubles and four triples. On the mound he was equally as impressive, boasting a 1.39 earned run average. Swenson and teammate Austin Schmitt also combined to throw a no-hitter against MACCRAY.

Swenson is hoping to enjoy more success on the diamond in 2018 as he closes out his prep sports career as a Blackjack.

“Our goal is to improve upon our record and make it further in the section tournament,” Swenson said. “We want everybody to be successful, not just a handful of guys.”

This past fall Swenson helped guide the Blackjacks to a 6-2 record on the gridiron. The Blackjacks lost in the opening round of the section tournament to Canby, 21-7. Swenson said his goal this season is to help the Blackjacks get deeper into the playoffs.

“I hope to accomplish a better record for our team,” Swenson said. “I’d like to see us go pretty far in the playoffs.”

Swenson started playing football in his backyard at a young age. He said he likes the competitiveness of the game.

“I like the competitive nature of football,” Swenson said. “A single play can change the momentum of the game. It’s just fun how big plays really make an impact.”

This fall Swenson is hoping to make more of those big plays on the field. In order to do that he said he needs to get faster.

“I’m working on my quickness to be able to run around the field,” Swenson said. “I want to be able to make bigger plays.”

Swenson started playing competitive basketball when he was in first grade. Just like football, he said he likes the competitive nature of the game.

“I like how fast paced the game of basketball can be,” Swenson said. “You really have to bear down if you want things to go your way. I really like how long the season is.”

This will be Swenson’s final year on the hardwood for the Blackjacks. He’s hoping it won’t be his final season of playing competitive basketball.

“I think I would like to play college basketball,” Swenson said. ” I’ve been playing it for so long. A couple of colleges have talked to me about that. I’m going to try and make that happen.”

Every community takes pride in their local high school teams. Swenson said he’ll miss all the support that him and his fellow teammates have gotten over the years.

“I’m going to miss all the pride and town support that we get every week in every sport,” Swenson said. “It’s really fun to play for the coaches. I will cherish all the memories I made with my friends.”
