BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Marshall VFW Orange splits pair of games to finish third

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Marshall VFW Orange baseball team defeated Watertown 10-8 in six innings before falling to MB Silver (KS) 11-9 to take third place in the Mid-Summer Classic tournament Sunday.

Against Watertown, Brayden Hilgemann led the way for Marshall with a 4 for 5 day at the plate with an RBI while Jordan Mernaugh went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and Jack Bly went 2 for 2 with two RBIs.

Hilgemann earned the win in relief for Marshall, going three innings while allowing five hits and two runs while striking out two.

Against MB Silver, Bly led the way with a 4 for 4 day at the plate with two RBIs while Riley Alcorn went 3 for 4 and Peyton Grant went 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Kaleb Welvaert took the loss for Marshall, going 4.2 innings while allowing 10 runs on 10 hits while striking out four.

Marshall will face Willmar tonight.

PRINCETON – The Marshall Legion baseball team fell to Hutchinson 3-1 Sunday at the Princeton Tournament, taking second place.

Jake Hess led the way for the Mudcats with a 1 for 3 day at the plate with an RBI while Ryan VanMoer went 1 for 4 and Cody Greve, Kaleb Bossuyt and Casey Erbes all went 1 for 3.

Nick Klaith took the loss for Marshall on the hill, going 3.1 innings while allowing three hits and three runs while striking out one.

Against Brandon Valley, Jordan Mernaugh and Riley Alcorn led the way for Marshall with 3 for 3 days at the plate with an RBI apiece.

Jack Bly picked up the win on the hill, going 2.1 innings in relief while allowing one run on two hits while striking out three.

Against Lawrence, Peyton Grant led the way with a 3 for 3 day at the plate with two RBIs while Dillon Loft went 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Zach Olsen, Alcorn and Mernaugh also picked up two RBIs each.

Mernaugh earned the win, going three innings while allowing one hit and no runs while striking out three.

Kaleb Bossuyt led the way with a 1 for 4 day at the plate with two RBIs while Cody Greve went 3 for 3 with an RBI. Jake Hess, Ryan VanMoer and Brock Boerboom also picked up RBIs for Marshall as well.

Hess earned the win on the hill, going six innings while allowing five hits and two runs while striking out three.
