RUTHTON – There would be no Ruthton Royals rally against Fairmont on Sunday. The Royals dug themselves into an early three-run deficit and failed to string together enough hits to mount a rally. With the Ruthton bats silenced the visiting Fairmont Martins cruised to a 9-0 victory in seven innings against the Royals.

The first sign of trouble came when Royals’ starting pitcher Brent Wiering walked Fairmont’s leadoff man on four pitches. An RBI triple put the Martins on top 1-0. The Martins went on to score two more runs in the first frame to take an early 3-0 lead.

Fairmont appeared on the cusp of breaking the game open in the second inning with the bases loaded, but a diving catch from right fielder Mic Holinka got the Royals out of jam unscathed.

In the third inning Fairmont once again had the bases loaded, but thanks to some solid defense the Royals were able to keep the Martins at bay. The Royals went down in order in the bottom half of the inning.

The Martins added one more run in the top of the fourth to open up a 4-0 lead. In the top of the fifth the Martins broke the game open, scoring four runs to give themselves a commanding 8-0 lead. The Martins tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh to take a 9-0 lead.

Chris Dougherty, Brent Wiering, Shay Wabake, Jake Fischer and Ryan Fischer all picked up one hit for the Royals.

The Royals lost their first game of their weekend homestand against Tracy, 6-5. With the two losses the Royals have now lost 11 straight and are 1-14 overall.
