PREP GOLF: Local teams, golfers wrap up the first day of the state meet

BECKER – What started as a gorgeous morning at Becker Golf Club Tuesday turned into a windy and hot afternoon, but despite Mother Nature’s flip of the switch in conditions, the opening round of the Class A state golf tournament came and went.

Two area teams and nine area individuals converged on the two-course layout with admirations of giving themselves and their teams a good head start in the final rounds of the season.

The boys’ groupings teed off first, with Westbrook-Walnut Grove’s Anthony Ross leading the charge with a picture-perfect drive down the middle of the fairway. And with that drive, the state tournament was officially underway.

Anthony Ross was consistent with his opening round, firing an 86 to go into a tie for 38th place. Andrew Quade shot an 85 to lead the way for the Chargers with a tie for 32nd place. Kyle Kuehl (90) came in a tie for 59th while Cole Bunting shot 97 (77th) and Jack Jorgenson had 100 (T-81st). Nathan Ross rounded out the scores for WWG with a 104 to finish 84th. The Chargers sit in eighth place with a team score of 358. Mahnomen/Waubun sits in first with a 316, followed by Sleepy Eye United (330) and Mounds Park Academy (331).

After the teams went out, it was the individual qualifiers’ turn. Wabasso’s Garrett Sagedahl shot 99 to come in a tie for 78th place while Minneota’s Nolan Boerboom shot 84 to finish tied for 29th. Murray County Central’s Jack Pierson and Tyler Groves both fired 87s to tie to 42nd while Dawson-Boyd’s Tyler Lund shot an 82 to crack the Top 20 at a tie for 19th.

After the boys completed their rounds, it was time for the girls’ groupings. The Minneota girls were led by Heidi Guttormsson, who fired a score almost as blistering as the afternoon heat. She finished with a 78, including an even-par 36 on the back nine, good enough to vault her into a tie for third place after the opening round. Nicole Evers shot a 95 to tie for 42nd while Laura Knutson shot 100 to come in a tie for 50th and Brooklynn Downing had a 103 to finish 61st.

Allison Citterman shot 109 (T-72nd) and Carolyn Hoffman shot 112 (T-75th) to round out the scores for the Vikings, who currently sit in fifth place with a team score of 376. Springfield is in first with a 341, followed by Fillmore Central (348) and BOLD (357).

The individual qualifiers for the girls capped off the day, with Murray County Central’s Abby Hamman firing an 82 to come in seventh. The freshman Rebel shot a two-over 38 on the front nine to guide her opening round. WWG’s Brittany Erickson shot 100 to finish tied with Knutson for 50th while Tracy-Milroy-Balaton’s Megan Schmitt had 112 to tie with Hoffman at 75th place.

The final round begins today at 7:30 a.m. with the boys teeing off first.
