AMATEUR BASEBALL: Milroy Yankees fall to Bird Island, 10-2

Milroy’s Austin Deutz delivers a pitch during their game against Bird Island on Wednesday.

MILROY – Over the first two months of the amateur baseball season, the Milroy Yankees have experienced both highs and lows on offense. The team has scored more than ten runs on multiple occasions, which has helped them achieve a 9-7 record entering their game against Bird Island on Wednesday. On the other hand, the Yankees have been shut out themselves in two of their losses. The question of which offense would show up was answered under the lights of Yankee Field. The home team went away disappointed, as Milroy could only muster three hits in a 10-2 defeat against the Bullfrogs.

Bird Island, a team already with ten wins on the season, was in control from the outset. Bird Island’s Shawn Dollerschell hit the first of his three singles off Yankees starter Austin Deutz. Logan Swann then walked, and after both runners advanced on a ground ball, Lane Stadther delivered a two-run base hit that gave the Bullfrogs the early lead. Deutz got into trouble again in the third after walking two batters and giving up a sacrifice fly to Dylan Gass, but he limited them to one run in the inning, giving Milroy a chance to make a run later on. Bird Island starter Logan Nissen was solid all night, pitching seven innings of three-hit ball, but the Yankees were able to string together several hits against him in the bottom of the fourth. Nissen got two straight outs to start the inning, but Dylan Criquet-Danielson began a rally by getting hit by a pitch. Riley Carpenter then worked his way on with a walk, which set up a run scoring opportunity for Austin Kretsch. Kretsch came through when it counted, lining an RBI single up the middle to put the Yankees on the board. Darrick Allpress continued the inning with an RBI hit of his own, and Milroy now only trailed by a run. The tight score was short-lived however, as the Bullfrog bats came alive in the top of the fifth. Bird Island scored four runs on five hits in the inning, none bigger than Logan Swann’s two-run homer that sailed over the left field wall. It was really the only inning where Deutz struggled, as he was able to pitch deep into the game. Deutz held the Bullfrogs scoreless over the next three innings, but Milroy could not come through at the plate. In fact, after scoring their two runs in the fourth, the team did not get another base runner until the ninth inning. Nolan Schaeffer and Andrew Mathiowetz both walked in the inning, but by that point the Bullfrogs had extended their lead to 10-2. Nothing came of the walks, and the Yankees lost by that same score.

Aside from a couple innings, Milroy played well on defense, but their bats remained quiet. Allpress, Kretsch, and Andy Schmidt were the only Yankee batters to get hits in the game. On the other side, Dollerschell, Gass, Stadther, and Logan Sandgren all had multi-hit games for the Bullfrogs. Milroy will have to perform well in a tournament over the weekend to keep their record above .500.
