PREP SOFTBALL: New Ulm halts Tigers’ postseason run

MANKATO – The fourth time was not the charm for the Marshall Tigers on Saturday against the New Ulm Eagles. The Tigers and Eagles had squared off three times prior to Saturday’s subsection tournament game. In the first meeting New Ulm edged Marshall, 5-3. The next two meetings were dominated by New Ulm, with the Eagles winning 10-0, and 12-2.

The fourth encounter was much like the previous two meetings, with the Eagles defeating the Tigers, 10-0 in five innings and putting an end to their season.

The Tigers went down in order in the top of the first inning. After the Eagles scratched across one run in the bottom of the first, the Tigers once again went down in order in the top of the second inning.

In the bottom half of the second the Eagles were on the cusp of breaking the game open. They had the bases loaded with two outs and already one run across in the inning. The Tigers were able to escape the bases-loaded jam without any further damage by getting the final out on a routine infield pop-up.

“We had a few walks that put us in bad spots,” Marshall coach Jack Houseman said. “We played better defensively than we did the first two games. We made the routine plays that we’re supposed to make.”

Paige Andries led off the top of the third inning by picking up Marshall’s first and only hit of the game, when she picked up an infield single by beating out the throw to first.

The Eagle bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning, as they hit four doubles and scored eight runs to build a commanding 10-0 lead. New Ulm’s big inning forced the Tigers to make a pitching change. Madison Wegner relieved starting pitcher Karley Polejewski. Wegner went onto to pitch the final 1.2 innings and recorded one strikeout and gave up two hits.

“She’s spinning it better,” Houseman said. “We still have to work on location, so she can zero in on where she wants the ball to go.”

In the top of the fourth inning the Tigers once again went down in order. In the top of the fifth inning the Tigers were able to get runners on first and second, but were unable to plate a run to extend the game past five innings.

With the loss the Tigers finished the season with an 8-15 record. It’s a Tiger team that had no seniors and just two juniors. With such a young roster Houseman said that this season was the building block for the future.

“This season is something to build on,” he said. “We have a lot of lefties and we have a lot of speed. We didn’t catch a lot of breaks, we were pretty dinged up. We are young and we’ll bounce back quickly. We’ll go to work this summer.”
