PREP SOFTBALL: Lakers defeat Panthers, fall to BOLD to end season

COTTONWOOD – The Lakeview softball team used a late-inning rally to eliminate Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 7-5 before seeing their season come to an end with a 14-4 loss to BOLD in six innings in the Section 3A playoffs Saturday afternoon.

After the Lakers defeated Renville County West 11-1 in six innings, they fell to Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 5-2 on Tuesday to fall into the consolation bracket. The Panthers, meanwhile, had defeated Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 3-2 in their opening game before falling to Wabasso 12-2 in five innings on Tuesday to find their way to the weekend matchup against Lakeview.

TMB jumped out of the gate to start in the top of the first, scoring three runs to take an early 3-0 lead. Lakeview would respond with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame, before cutting the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI triple by Sadie Stelter.

After a scoreless fourth, the Panthers would extend their lead to 5-2 in the top of the fifth. After a leadoff infield single by Sydney Lanoue, Kelsey Nordsiden got a single to go through the infield before Brooklyn Ludeman and Alex Rolling got a pair of RBI singles to push the Panthers lead to three runs.

The Lakers would get another run back in the bottom of the fifth, with Kiana Imes drawing a bases-loaded walk to cut it to 5-3. After Lakeview held TMB scoreless in next half inning, the Lakers would stage a rally in the bottom of the sixth.

After the first out was recorded on a groundout, Trinity Kirckof drew a walk before Michaela Schuster reached on an error and advanced to second to put runners in scoring position. Kylie Hanson was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Brooklin Peltier slapped a single into left field to bring around what many thought would be a Lakers run.

But the throw from the leftfielder was a bullet through the infield to the catcher, who applied the tag at home to prevent the run and give TMB its second out of the inning. Despite the great play, however, Stelter stepped up and smashed a bases-clearing triple to put Lakeview back in front, 6-5. An RBI single then gave the Lakers a 7-5 lead later in the inning, as the Lakers came-from-behind for the two-run victory.

Lakeview coach Tony Johnson said he was happy with his team’s ability to recover after a flat start to the game.

“We came out kind of flat and gave them three runs early. They just kept battling and the later the game went, the more confidence we got. We started putting the bat to the ball pretty good and I said to my assistant that I wanted to see the bottom half of the order put the bat on the ball more. They finally did it, and Imes hit a shot out there to score a couple of runs and that was huge.”

Stelter led the way for the Lakers with a 3 for 3 day at the plate with four RBIs while Tiana Hay went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Imes went 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Stelter also earned the victory in the circle for Lakeview, going seven innings while allowing five runs on 12 hits while striking out 11.

Johnson said Stelter did a nice job of adjusting to the TMB batters as the game went along.

“Sadie did a nice job. They were sitting one of her pitches pretty hard and was waiting for it to come. She did a nice job and figured things out quick of what we needed to work on in terms of the throw to get them out,” Johnson said. “For a while, my catcher wasn’t even looking at me at times; they were calling their own signs and knew what they wanted to throw, which I’m totally fine with.”

Evy Dolan led the way for the Panthers with a 3 for 4 day at the plate while Karbo went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and Nordsiden went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Lanoue took the loss for TMB, going six innings while giving up seven runs on six hits and striking out five.

The Panthers end their season with a 15-8 record.

Lakeview then advanced to face BOLD, who were beaten by Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian 20-2 in four innings earlier in the day. Unfortunately for the Lakers, E/SWC reversed their outcome from the first game and used a big second inning to beat Lakeview 14-4 in six innings and knock the Lakers out of the playoffs.

Despite what the final score read, it would be the Lakers who jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, as they took a 2-0 advantage.

But the Warriors broke out the bats in the bottom of the second, taking the lead at 8-2 and never giving it up. The big frame for BOLD was highlighted by a two-run single and a two-run double as well as a couple of Lakeview defensive mistakes that allowed a pair of runs to score.

BOLD then added another run in the bottom of the third to take a 9-2 lead, before Lakeview scored again in the top of the fifth to cut it to 9-3.

The Lakers would then score another run in the top of the sixth when Imes drew a walk and Kaitlynn Bot reached on an error before Imes came around on a wild pitch.

But just like they did in the second, the Warriors used another big inning, scoring five runs to make it a 10-run lead and end the game.

Peltier led the way for the Lakers with a 2 for 3 day at the plate while Stelter went 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Stelter also took the loss in the circle, going 5.33 innings while giving up 14 runs on 15 hits while striking out four.

The Lakers end their season with a 12-10 record.
