Section 3AA Girls Tournament

OAKDALE – The Marshall girls golf team was one of five teams to qualify for the final day of the Section 3AA tournament on Wednesday.

The Tigers shot a team score of 350 to finish tied for second with Morris Area, with Minnewaska Area shooting a 345 to take first. Litchfield came in third with a score of 361.

Ana Schwarz led the way for Marshall with an 80 while Kaylee Gossen had an 86 and Anna Jennings and Olivia Peterson both had 92s. Megan Kock shot 96 while Ashtyn Eben shot 100 to round out the scores for Marshall.

Fifteen individuals also qualified for Day 2 of the tournament, with Anneke Weg of Worthington and Abby Benson of JCC leading the way with scores of 83 and 89, respectively.

Tigers coach Gretchen Flynn said the team was a little nervous to start, but were able to settle down.

“Tensions were high today as we started play and our girls took a few holes to settle into their rounds,” Flynn said. “Anna, being our lone senior on the section team, took the team out in the first round of section play at the No. 1 spot going up against Ashlyn Guggisberg from Minnewaska and Shiori Legate from Morris. She turned in a 45 for her first 9 but then struggled after the turn with three consecutive doubles. She found her rhythm again and finished with a 92. Ana was the low round of the day for Marshall with an 80 after starting her round six over after six holes. Ana was feeling the pressure to produce a low score for us and once she settled down and played her game, she finished two over for her last 9 holes.”

Flynn continued, “Kaylee turned in a comfortable round of 86. She played excellent golf outside of four holes and we expect to see her drop a few strokes Tuesday as the nerves have burned off. The Morris team had a great round with several players posting some of their best scores of the season. We have not played with Morris this season and our girls really enjoyed playing with them. It was fun to see the comradery develop through the round.”

Ana Schwarz said the key to her round was striking the ball well and settling down on her putting. She added her team is focused on lowering their scores and coming out with a win next Tuesday.

“I was hitting the ball well throughout the whole round, but I really struggled with putting on my first few holes. That frazzled me a little bit because I typically rely on my putting, but once I got a handle on it, the rest of the round went pretty smoothly,” Schwarz said. “It was good for my teammates and I to get the first round out of the way, but we’re all hungry for a better score next week. I have faith that we can go out even stronger on Tuesday and win this tournament.”

The Tigers will be back in action for Day 2 of the tournament on Tuesday in Oakdale. The top finishing team and the top five individuals not on that team over the two days will advance to the Class AA State Tournament in Jordan on June 13-14.
