WORTHINGTON – The Marshall boys and girls golf teams battled its conference opponents Monday afternoon at the GreatLife Malaska Golf and Fitness Club in Worthington. The girls shot 344 to take first place while the boys tied for first with Worthington with a 312.

On the girls side, Kaylee Gossen led the way for Marshall with an 83 while Ana Schwarz had an 84 and Anna Jennings had an 88. Olivia Peterson had an 89 while Ashtyn Eben shot 96 and Rachel Schwarz shot 105 to round out the scores for the Tigers.

Jennings said her round was something she’s waited to happen all season.

“This is the round I have been waiting for all season. It’s about time that I not only prove to my coaches that I can do it, but to myself as well,” Jennings said.

The Big South All-Conference Team was also announced on Monday. Ana Schwarz, Rachel Schwarz and Gossen all made it for Marshall.

Marshall coach Gretchen Flynn was extremely pleased with her team’s scores.

“The girls played steady golf, with Anna having a PR today of 88 for us,” Flynn said. “I am very pleased with Anna’s round. We knew she was capable if shooting in the 80s and is peaking at the right time. I am proud of all the girls and how hard they have worked this year.”

On the boys side, Spencer Ehlers led the way for Marshall with a 72 while Mason Plante had a 74 and Addison Clarin had an 82. Landon Frost shot an 84 while Brenden Archbold had 89 and Ethan VanHauwaert shot 97 to round out the scores for the Tigers.

Ehlers, Plante and Clarin all made the Big South All-Conference team.

Marshall coach Kari Ehlers said she was happy with her team’s round.

“It was a great day for us today. The team came in with a season low score of 312. Today’s team score was tied for the best score of the day with Worthington,” coach Ehlers said. “Throughout our season we use a point system both for individual and team standings. Although Marshall fell short in the quest for the overall team title, our boys really came to play today. It was exciting to see them play well as a unit and support each other. I have high expectations of how they portray themselves on the golf course as individuals, and as a team Their sportsmanship, demeanor, and attitudes in good and bad situations on the course is crucial to keeping a steady mental state. Playing a five hour round should be both physically and mentally draining. The boys certainly represented MHS very well.”

Coach Ehlers added her players were able to find different ways to help the team shoot low.

“Paving the way for the team were our two sophomores, Spencer Ehlers and Mason Plante. Spencer finished his round with a two over par 72. This tied the best individual score of the day with Ben Koepsell from Worthington. Again, with the points system used in individual standings, Spencer was able to secure second place overall for the season behind Koepsell. Spencer kept his cool while playing with some of the best golfers in the area. He really rose to the occasion and played a very steady round today and has had a super season. Mason Plante battled back from a slow start to his round in route to a 35 on his back nine. When I see Mason with that skip in his step, I know that he is putting some good holes together. Our assistant coach, Charlie Kost, does a really great job calming Mason’s nerves while getting his groove going.”

Coach Ehlers continued, “Addison Clarin continues to be a steady performer for the team. While out playing, Addison is a “no nonsense” kind of guy. He goes about his job, doesn’t make a lot of fuss, and then moves on. His brain is always thinking about how to hit the next shot and reach his full potential,” she said. “Landon Frost, a freshman, has strung together some great rounds lately. His 84 today was his personal best. I am very proud of the fact that Landon doesn’t seem to get rattled easily. He played with a kid today that shot a 76. Instead of being intimidated by a player of that caliber, he rose to the occasion in turn putting together two great nines. Brenden Archbold shot an 89 and Ethan Van Hauwaert a 97 to round out the 6 spots for the Tigers.”

Next up for the girls team is section play Wednesday at Oakdale Golf Club while the boys will be back in action on Thursday.
