SMSU BASEBALL: SMSU drops doubleheader to Augustana
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana University used timely hitting to earn a doubleheader sweep over Southwest Minnesota State on Thursday in NSIC baseball, winning 9-1 and 6-2, at Karras Park at Ronken Field.
Patrick O’Donnell and Kris Ashland combined to drive in six runs to lead Augustana (26-15, 20-6 NSIC) to the victory in game one. Ryan Hamilton allowed one run on five hits in six innings to pick up the victory for the Vikings.
Augustana scored three first inning runs and never looked back in the game one victory.
Jared Tschetter (1-4) started on the mound for SMSU and lasted three innings, allowing eight runs (six earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Brandon Woznak tossed the final three innings giving up one run on three hits.
SMSU (9-25, 4-20 NSIC) scored its lone run in the second inning as Derek Branson and Shane Sellner each recorded singles. Following a fielder’s choice putting runners on the corners with one out, Liam Lopez singled through the left side to make the score 3-1.
The Vikings went on to add two runs in the third and three more in the fourth to blow the game open.
In game two, Sam Baier from Augustana snapped a scoreless game with a solo home run in the third inning to put the Vikings in front.
SMSU quickly responded in the fourth inning as Lopez belted a two-out solo home run to left field to tie the game at 1-1.
The Vikings regained the lead in the fifth scoring three runs on two hits and taking advantage of Mustang miscues. Following an RBI single to Baier, the Vikings added two more runs on a passed ball and a wild pitch.
Lopez answered in the sixth inning with another two-out solo home run to cut the deficit to 4-2, but that was as close as the Mustangs would come, as Augustana plated two runs in the sixth to make the score 6-2.
Chase Meyer (1-3) took the loss for SMSU, throwing five innings and giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits. He struck out two and walked two, while also hitting one batter.
Lopez was the only Mustang to record more than one hit in the nightcap.
Augustana out-hit SMSU 8-5 in game one and 9-8 in game two.
Southwest Minnesota State returns home to Alumni Field this Saturday and Sunday hosting the University of Mary for a four-game series. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
