PREP BASEBALL: Marshall splits pair of games over weekend

MARSHALL – The Marshall baseball team defeated West Fargo Sheyenne 8-6 before falling to West Fargo 10-0 in six innings during their home tournament on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Legion Field.

In their opener against West Fargo Sheyenne, Marshall found themselves down 3-0 after the top of the first, but responded with two runs of its own in the home half of the first to cut it to 3-2.

Marshall would take its first lead of the day in the bottom of the second when Joe Blanchard drew a one-out walk and then stole second base. With a runner in scoring position, Mason Penske smacked an RBI double to tie the game at 3-3 before an RBI single by Zach Thompson later in the inning gave the Tigers a 4-3 lead.

After a scoreless third inning, the Mustangs reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth with two runs to make it 5-4. WFS would then add another run in the top of the sixth to extend its advantage to 6-4.

But the Tigers wouldn’t go away without a fight, as they compiled a rally in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good. Dylan Criquet-Danielson led off the inning with a double before a Thompson walk and a Nick Klaith sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out.

Jake Hess would then reach on an error, with a run scoring in the process. Brock Boerboom then slapped an RBI single to tie the game again at six, before a wild pitch and another RBI sacrifice brought it to the 8-6 final.

Logan Tomasek was the starter in Game 1, going three innings and allowing four runs on three hits while striking out one.

Marshall coach Chace Pollock said they were able make enough plays and do enough offensively to earn a gritty victory.

“It was a sloppy game. We did enough to win and had a clutch inning late to give us the lead,” Pollock said. “We battled all game and made most of the plays we needed to make.”

In the nightcap, the Tigers faced the West Fargo Packers, with the Packers breaking out the bats offensively to earn a 10-0 shutout in six innings.

West Fargo jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning before making it 3-0 after three innings of play. The Tigers hung around throughout the first four innings, but seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined put the game out of reach.

Isaac Schmitt took the loss for the Tigers on the mound, giving up five runs on four hits while striking out three in four innings of work. Marshall only recorded three hits as a team on the game.

“That’s the best team we’ve faced this season,” Pollock said. “They hit the ball hard and had six or seven extra base hits. They were really good competition.”

Marshall (4-3) will face Fairmont on Tuesday.
