MARSHALL – The Wabasso Rabbits and the Lac qui Parle Valley Eagles faced each other to tip-off the 2016 regular season, with the Rabbits earning the season opening victory, 74-67. The two teams squared off again Tuesday evening in the Section 3A North Semifinals to see which team would advance and which team would have their season ended.

This time around it was the Eagles getting the upper hand, using a strong shooting performance to defeat Wabasso, 64-51.

“They lit it up,” Wabasso coach, Neil Dolan said. “I have to give them all the credit in the world. They shot lights out and we were still in the game. They buried everything. Tonight just wasn’t our night.”

LQPV’s, Kelsea Lund knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the game’s opening minutes to help the Eagles jump out to a 8-5 lead. Lund would go on to knock down four 3-pointers in the first half to help the Eagles take a 29-23 lead into the locker room.

“We we’re still in the game,” Dolan said. “We told the girls any time you run into a team that shoots that well and only down six at the half that we had a shot. They just shot lights out.”

Lund started the second half by knocking down her fifth 3-pointer of the game to give LQPV a 32-23 lead. With the Rabbits trailing 34-23, Madison Guetter hit her fourth 3-pointer of the game to trim LQVP’s lead to 34-26.

The Rabbits were able to keep within striking distance in the second half, but just couldn’t find a way to slow down the hot-shooting Eagles.

“We had a hand in their face,” Dolan said. At one point it didn’t get funny, but it was entertaining.”

Guetter finished the game with 23 points and grabbed six rebounds. Dolan said that Guetter did a good job of keeping the Rabbits in the game.

“Madison Guetter kept us in it,” Dolan said. “If we would have had one or two kids just have a few more shots go down, now it’s a different game. You have to give Lac qui Parle Valley all the credit in the world. They shot the ball well and took care of the basketball. They have good guards and they just shot the lights out.”

Jenna Frank scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds. Lindsey Bernardy also chipped in with nine points. Dolan said that Bernardy did a good of getting the team out in transition.

“We did a good job in transition,” He said. “Lindsey Bernardy pushed the ball. We pushed tempo like we needed to.”

With the loss the Rabbits finished the season with a 13-14 record. The Rabbits will return everybody for next season, except senior guard, Alison Benz.

“We lost 56 points from last year’s team,” Dolan said. “I’m so proud of these kids. We made it to sub-section semifinals and gave Lac qui Parle Valley all they could handle. We are a young team. I’m just so proud of the kids. After losing so much firepower from last year’s team I thought we had a great season.”
