SMSU WRESTLING: NCAA Super Region III Tournament day two results

MOORHEAD – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team competed in the NCAA Super Region III tournament this Friday and Saturday in the Alex Namzek Fieldhouse with Cole Hennen and Cortez Arredondo finishing in the top six of their respective weight classes.

Day two (Saturday, Feb. 25)

Cortez Arredondo began the second day of competition by earning a 4-1 decision over Cody Haugen of Minot State to stay alive in the 149 third place bracket. Arredondo was then defeated by a TB-1 tiebreaker to James Pleski of No. 1 St. Cloud State, 2-1. After moving into the fourth place bracket, Arredondo lost a 4-1 decision to Damian Penichet. The second loss of the tournament to Penichet gave Arredondo a sixth place finish in the 149 bracket.

Cole Hennen won an 8-5 decision over John Filipek to start day two. Hennen was then bounced from the third place bracket following a 4-2 loss to Uthman Rabiu. Hennen’s fifth place match opponent, David Hamil, was then forced to forfeit due to injury.

By rule, because Hennen’s would-be opponent in a true fourth place match had defeated him earlier in the day, Hennen was forced to settle for a fifth place finish. Hennen’s finish was the highest for an SMSU wrestler at this year’s NCAA Super Region III Tournament as he finished with a 4-2 record on the weekend.
