SMSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: SMSU’s season comes to an end with first round loss to MSU Moorhead

MOORHEAD — The Southwest Minnesota State women’s basketball team had its season come to a close following a 71-35 defeat at the hands of No. 11 MSU Moorhead on Wednesday night in the Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.

Lauren Hedlund finished with 13 points on the night and is now just 17 points away from joining the 1,000 career points milestone heading into her senior season next year.

The Mustangs suffered from 18 turnovers and had its lowest point total (35) of the season in the first round loss. SMSU had just 12 made field goals to the Dragons’ 31 field goals.

MSU Moorhead shot 48 percent (31-65) on the night while SMSU was held to just 21 percent shooting during the contest and a season low 11 percent (2-19) 3-point shooting percentage as a team.

The Dragons’ bench outscored the SMSU bench 30-6 on the night.

MSU Moorhead jumped on top of the Mustangs as the Dragons raced to an 8-0 lead in the game’s first 1:46. At the end of the first quarter the Dragons led the Mustangs 21-6.

The second quarter was much like the first quarter, with the Mustangs being outscored by the Dragons, 18-4.

The Dragons’ controlled the first half as they carried their largest lead of the half (29) into the halftime break.

MSU Moorhead held its firm grip on the game throughout the second half as it reached its largest lead of the game of 44 two minutes into the fourth quarter. The Mustangs were able to outscore the Dragons 17-15 in the final quarter.

The 36-point defeat was the Mustangs’ largest of the season as SMSU suffers its fourth loss to a ranked team on the year and its second loss against MSU Moorhead.

Hedlund led the Mustangs with 13 points. Hedlund also grabbed six rebounds.

Caleigh Rodning chipped in with six points and grabbed a team-leading 10 rebounds.

Sarah Buysse knocked down a 3-pointer and finished with five points. Taylor Hollicky scored four points. Abby Connell scored three, and Laurie Bohler and Emily Buysse rounded out the scoring with two points apiece.

The loss was the final game for seniors Taylor Silva, Abby Connell, and Brianna VonWahlde. Kendra Snaza also wraps up her Mustang’ career after missing most of her senior season with an injury.

Southwest Minnesota State will turn its attention to the 2017 offseason as it will return its top five leading scorers and top four leaders in rebounding.
