MARSHALL – A slow start to a dual came back to doom the United wrestling team on Tuesday. United lost five of the first six matches of the dual and couldn’t dig themselves out of the early hole, as they fell to Redwood River Valley 39-36.

“We’ve got a bunch of junior high kids down in the lower weight classes,” United coach, Ross Jurgenson said. “We have our experienced wrestlers in the heavier classes. One of our senior captains hurt his knee and that hurt a lot. We lost the flip and if we win the flip that could have helped a little, but they outwrestled us tonight. You have to give them all the credit.”

Trevon Gearman picked up United’s first victory in the match in the 120-weight class. Gearman pinned his opponent with 16 seconds left in the first period.

Following Gearman’s pinfall victory United lost the next three matches. Peyton Mortenson got United back on the board when he picked up a pinfall victory in the 152-weigth class.

United picked up their third pinfall victory of the dual in the 170-weight class. Colton Struxness won by fall with 21 seconds left in the first period.

In the 195-weight class Austin Schmidt won by decision 5-4. United won the final two matches by fall, with Cole Bungarden and Mason Hutt both picking up the pinfall victories. In the end the late surge wasn’t enough to propel United to the second round of the section tournament.

“Those guys have done that all year,” Jurgenson said. “Our top end guys have done an outstanding job all year. We’ve always been able to finish strong all year and eek out victories. We just weren’t able to do that tonight. I’m just really proud of this team.”
