MARSHALL – The Marshall Tiger wrestling team advanced to the Section 3AA Semifinals with their 42-17 victory over Redwood River Valley on Thursday. The Tigers picked up three pinfall victories en route to their second round section tournament victory.

“We kind of had to make some adjustments and they adjusted well,” Marshall coach Justin Bouwman said. “We game-planned for one scenario and had to make some adjustments on the fly. The kids came out ready to wrestle. Sometimes when you don’t get to wrestle in that first dual it’s hard. They came out aggressive and ready to wrestle and put it all out there.”

Hsa Khee Lar got the match started off with a 12-4 decision victory in the 106-weight class. Hsa La Eh recorded the Tigers first win by fall in the 120-weight class. Redwood River Valley then picked up their first win of the dual in the 126-weight class. The Tigers then won the next three matches of the dual to open up a 24-4 match lead. Dylan Dulas, Zach Stahl and Toby Semler all picked up wins by decision during that stretch.

Wyatt Martin picked up the Tigers second win by fall in the 195-weight class. Martin pinned his opponent in 33 seconds.

“Wyatt is just really starting to come around,” Bouwman said. “He was in a bit of a slump for a little bit and he just figured it out. Wyatt is Wyatt, you really can’t coach a whole lot of Wyatt does, but you just let him go and he does his thing.”

In the 220-weight class Redwood River Valley earned their only pin of the night when Chad Maddock pinned Jaiden Bahr. Brendin Otto put an exclamation mark on Marshall’s victory by picking up the pinfall victory at the 1:44 mark.

The Tigers will face Fairmont in the section championship on Saturday in Wabasso. The match is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. Bouwman said his team is going to have to come out with the same intensity they showed during their victory tonight.

“Saturday we’re going to have to hold off giving up pins,” Bouwman said. “They are really good at the bottom. We need to prevent giving up pins and really need to be on our game.”
