MADISON – The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers second half comeback fell just short in the Camden Conference Championship game on Monday. Closing out the second half on a 12-2 run, the Panthers were able to force overtime. Unfortunately for TMB, the momentum they gained to close out regulation didn’t carry over into the overtime period, as they were edged 52-50 by the Lac qui Parle Valley Eagles.

“We didn’t play with great effort in the first half,” TMB coach Derek Ashbaugh said. “I thought the girls did a nice job of changing that in the second half. The intensity on defense was much better in the second half. You have to give credit to Lac qui Parle Valley. They played really hard the entire game and went out there and earned this one.”

The first half was a back-and-forth contest, with neither team being able to create much separation. There were 13 lead changes and five ties, until the Eagles gained some breathing room by going on a 7-0 run to end the first half to take a 32-25 lead into the locker room.

Evelyn Dolan led the Panthers with eight points in the first half. Gabbie Gervais knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and had seven points.

“We were getting out rebounded in the first half,” Ashbaugh said. “We weren’t tracking down loose balls. We turned the ball over on offense. We just played a sloppy first half. They played great pressure defense and forced us into mistakes. We did a better job of handling it in the second half. We adjusted and were able to come back, but it was too little too late.”

The Panthers fell behind by as many as 10 in the second half, before mounting their late comeback. The Panthers trailed 46-38 before closing out regulation on their key run to force overtime.

In overtime, the Panthers just couldn’t put together enough offense to come out on top. They shot 1 of 5 from the floor, with the lone bucket coming off a Kaylee Kirk fastbreak layup. Kirk’s desperation half-court heave at the buzzer came up short, as the Panthers fell 52-50.

Kirk finished the game 18 points, with 15 of them coming in the second half and overtime period. Kirk also dished out six assists and recorded five steals.

Dolan finished with 16 points, six rebounds and six steals. Sydney Lanoue chipped in with seven points and grabbed eight rebounds. Gervais finished with seven points and four rebounds.

TMB (23-3) will wrap up the regular season tonight when they host the Springfield Tigers. The Tigers are 16-10 and have lost three of their last four games.

“I’m hoping we bounce back and play with better effort throughout the entire game,” Ashbaugh said. “Springfield is a good team. They have a Division II player. We need to be able to play through some adversity. It’s going to be senior night and hopefully they can go out in style.”
