PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: First round of sections in the books

Lakeview’s Sadie Stelter celebrates after knocking down a 3-pointer to force overtime

TRACY – The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers were without one of they’re leading scorers, Evelyn Dolan (sprained ankle) for the first round of the section tournament Saturday. The Panthers responded with a strong team effort en route to an impressive 76-47 victory against Redwood Valley to advance to the next round.

The opening stages of the game was a back and forth affair. Sydney Lanoue and Gabbie Gervais combined to score TMB’s first 11 points of the game.

They’ve been big all season long,” TMB coach, Derek Ashbaugh said. “I thought they did a tremendous job, especially early in the game, getting offensive rebounds and getting steals to get out in transition.”

Kaylee Kirk was the first Panther not named Lanoue or Gervais to score when she knocked down a pair of free throws to give TMB a 13-9 lead. The Cardinals then split a pair of free throws to cut TMB’s lead to three at 13-10. That’s as close as the Cardinals would get the rest of the evening, as the Panthers went on a 15-0 run to open up a commanding 28-10 lead.

“I thought the biggest thing is we played with energy,” Ashbaugh said. “We talked about the last two games how we didn’t play with great energy. They made a couple of shots early, but the energy was really good. We were able to force a couple of turnovers. The girls stepped up. We were missing Evelyn (Dolan). We had a lot of girls that were aggressive and really forced the issue.”

At the half the Panthers held a 39-19 lead. If Redwood Valley had any hopes of a second-half comeback they were quickly washed away when Kendra Ludeman opened the half by knocking down a corner 3-pointer.

Kirk, like she has all year did a bit of everything for the Panthers. The junior guard scored 19 points, grabbed nine rebounds, dished out six assists and recorded four steals. Lanoue scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds. Gervais also chipped in with 16 points and dished out four assists.

The Panthers will play Martin County West in the next round of the section tournament on Tuesday. MCW owns a 15-9 record and defeated Jackson County Central in their opening round matchup.

Ashbaugh said his team will have to play with the same energy if they are going to advance.

“We’ll have to play with good energy again,” he said. “We did a good job of rebounding, that’s going to be really important for us moving forward.”

Lakeview 76,

Montevideo 68

MONTEVIDEO – The No. 5 Lakeview girls basketball team found themselves down by three points, the possession of the ball and their season on the line. And then Sadie Stelter delivered.

With the Lakers trailing 68-65 and just 15.7 seconds left on the clock, the Lakers point guard took the ball down the court, went around a screen at the top of the key, and connected on a game-tying 3-pointer and force overtime.

In the extra period, Lakeview used stifling defense, holding Montevideo scoreless as the Lakers escaped with the 75-68 victory Saturday night in the Section 3AA tournament.

Stelter said she knew she had to step up and make the big play in order to save their season.

“Honestly, I didn’t know what was going in my head I just knew I didn’t want our season to be over. I had to knock down the three and I did,” said Stelter. “I shot it confidently and it went in.”

The game was tight to start, as Montevideo held a 5-2 lead. On Lakeview’s next possession, Stelter found senior post Maddie Fenske for the turnaround jumper, her 1,000 points for her career. Fenske said she was shocked when it went in.

“I just couldn’t believe it; I was just excited,” said Fenske. “I couldn’t have done it without my coaches, teammates or family. They have all supported me throughout the years and help me get better and better.”

The Lakers would take their first lead at 14-13 before the game became tight again.

The two teams traded baskets the rest of the first half, with Stelter hitting the buzzer-beating three to end the half to bring the Lakers to within three at 35-32.

In the second half, it was more back and forth play, until Montevideo held a 43-34 lead and built a 16-point lead with about 10 minutes to go. The Lakers kept chipping away, however, as they pulled to within single digits on several occasions to stay close.

Lakeview coach Mike Imes said he was proud of his team’s tenacity down the stretch and their ability to not give up.

“I’m so proud of our kids. It was an emotionally draining game. We came into the game knowing we would get a milestone from Maddie, we were down 16 and things looked bleak,” said Imes. “We battled, drew up the last shot for Sadie and she hit it. It’s probably the best feeling I’ve had coaching.”

Stelter finished the game with 36 points while Fenske added 19 and Bridget Varpness had 10.

Lakeview (14-12) advances to the Section 3AA quarterfinals and will face No. 1 New-London Spicer on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Montevideo.

Imes said it’s going to be a difficult task, as New-London Spicer is ranked in the Top 10 in the state.

“We’re going to enjoy this one, but we’ve got a lot of work to do. New London is one of the top teams in the state. I think what we need to take away from this is to believe in our talents and in each other. When you’re down 16 with 10-12 minutes left, that’s gut check time. We know have a heck of a battle ahead of us but we’re going to enjoy this.”

MONTEVIDEO – The No. 7 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start in the first half as the Knights fell to No. 2 Lac qui Parle Valley 70-53 Saturday afternoon in the Section 3A tournament.

The Eagles got out to a quick start as they scored the game’s first nine points. LQPV later made it 16-5 before extending its lead to 22-9 midway through the half.

The Knights would go on a 5-0 run to make it 22-14, but LQPV maintained at least a 10-point lead for the rest of the half and would go up 37-21 at the break.

The second half saw the Eagles increase their lead to as many as 19, but the Knights responded with a run of their own. RTR cut the deficit to 10 at 56-46 with 4:20 left but LQPV iced the game down the stretch with free throws.

Tina Haroldson led the way for the Knights with 21 points while Jonni Biren added seven.

RTR coach Josh Fredrickson said he was pleased with his team’s effort throughout the game.

“Overall, I was really proud of our girls effort, they played really hard,” said Fredrickson. “You’ve got to give Lac qui Parle Valley a lot of credit, they really came out and played hard. Our girls kept their heads up and I’m so proud of them.”

RTR finishes its season at 5-22. Fredrickson said this season was a good opportunity for the Knights to learn more about themselves as a group.

“I think we got some young girls that can do some good things,” said Fredrickson. “I think we found out a lot about ourselves; I think we need to become better shooters and free throw shooters but I think we’ve gained a lot of confidence heading into next year.”

No. 3 Wabasso 67, No. 6 Dawson-Boyd 35

MONTEVIDEO – The No. 3 Wabasso girls basketball team used a red-hot first half to its advantage to earn a 67-35 victory over No. 6 Dawson-Boyd Saturday afternoon in the Section 3A tournament.

Both teams would struggle with turnovers to start, but the Rabbits held a 6-0 lead. That lead would suddenly balloon to a 21-point mark at 29-8 and later to a 38-8 lead. The Rabbits would head into the halftime break with a 44-9 lead, as Dawson-Boyd was held to just one point over the final seven minutes of the first half.

The Blackjacks would start the second half on a run, using a 6-0 spurt. But Wabasso silenced Dawson-Boyd the rest of the way as they held its biggest lead at 36 points before earning the victory.

Maddy Guetter led the way for the Rabbits with 21 points while Jenna Frank added 13 and Alison Benz chipped in nine. Alex Sather led the way for the Blackjacks with 13 points.

Wabasso coach Neil Dolan said their defensive pressure in the first half led to transition baskets the other way, which helped open up the game.

“Our game is press and transition. When we’re able to do that, we’re a pretty good team,” said Dolan. “Our girls did a nice job of stopping the ball at the halfcourt and defensively that created havoc.”

Dawson-Boyd coach Justin Wagner said he was pleased with his team’s ability to not quit despite the large deficit in the first half.

“The first half it’s tough when you don’t make shots,” said Wagner. “I thought we did a good job coming out in the second half and not laying down and worked hard.”

The Blackjacks finish the season with a record of 7-19.

“We’re not a very tall team so we just need to play with tons and tons of energy,” said Wagner. “I thought our seniors gave us a lot of hard work and energy during the season and were able to fill those roles.”

Wabasso (14-13) advances to the Section 3A quarterfinals and will face No. 2 Lac qui Parle Valley on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Dolan said it’s going to be a tough matchup, but is looking forward to the challenge.

“There the No. 2 seed so it’s going to be tough,” said Dolan. “I expect a high-scoring game; it was down there the last time we played them. It was in the upper 70s. If we can do that, I expect us to play well.”
