CANBY – The Canby Lancers hosted the Yellow Medicine East Sting on Tuesday where the Lancers came out over the Sting, 80-49.

Canby got on the board early in the first with a 3-pointer by Riley Kockelman to put the Lancers up 3-1 over YME. Canby would hold the lead for the entirety of the game.

Sawyer Hansen then marked up a 3-pointer of his own to extend the Lancers lead to 16-7 over the Sting. YME defense was not able to stop Canby as the Lancers continued to extend their lead throughout the first half.

Wollum sunk his own 3-pointer later in the first half to put Canby up 26-19 over the Sting.

YME gave Canby numerous opportunities at the line, which the Lancers capitalized on to contribute largely to their 36-20 lead at the half. YME only had two opportunities at the line in the first half, where they went 2 of 3.

Kockelman once again got things started for Canby in the second half as he made the first basked of the half to extend Canby’s lead to 38-20.

Hansen marked up his second 3-pointer of the game early in the second half to put the Lancers up 47-22 over YME.

Nick Peterson was sent to the line with 14:37 remaining in the second half. Peterson went 1 of 2 but Canby held the lead 51-23.

Adam Durfee was then sent to the line with 11:15 remaining in the game where he went 1 of 2 to put Canby up 54-27 over the Sting.

Hansen came back to mark up his third 3-pointer of the game with approximately 10:10 remaining in the game. This extended Canby’s lead to 59-29 over YME.

Immediately after, Peterson was fouled again and sent to the line with 10:02 remaining in the game. He went 1 of 2 but Canby still lead 59-30.

Hansen came back for more as he marked up yet another 3-pointer to put Canby up 64-32 with 9:29 remaining in the game.

The Lancers took a timeout with 6:19 remaining in the game as they lead over the Sting 69-42.

Trevor Vandeputte marked up his first and only 3-pointer of the night to put the Lancers up 78-47 with 1:21 remaining in the game. Vandeputte would come back to make the last basket of the game to give Canby the 80-49 win over YME.

Canby coach Zach Traphagen was impressed with his team’s performance in their win over YME on Tuesday.

“We did a good job of coming out with intensity in the second half,” said Traphagen. “We try to play hard for the first five minutes of the second half and then the rest of the game kind of decides itself.”

Canby is next scheduled to play Lakeview on Friday.

Looking forward to this matchup, Traphagen said, “They are a physical team and they are very athletic. I am anticipating a defensive struggle against Lakeview.”

With Tuesday’s win, Canby has an overall record of 9-7.

YME was not able to capitalize offensively to overpower the Lancers on Tuesday night. With the loss, their overall record falls to 2-11.

“It seems that we either show up with good energy or we don’t, and tonight we didn’t start either half with good energy,” said YME coach Jake Suter of his team’s performance on Tuesday.

YME is next scheduled to play Benson on Thursday, a sectional matchup.

“They have a couple really good returning players from last year and we are going to have to play well to hang with them,” said Suter of the matchup.

These teams had faced each other earlier in the year where Canby also came out with the win.
