SMSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: SMSU women fall to Bemidji State, 82-66

BEMIDJI – Southwest Minnesota State (2-14, 2-10 NSIC), never led against Bemidji State (5-11, 2-10 NSIC) who went on a 17-3 run in final three minutes of the first half and never looked back as the Mustangs dropped their second game of the weekend 82-66 on Saturday evening in the BSU Gymnasium.

Taylor Holicky was a primary option on offense for the Mustangs coming off of a career high scoring night as she put up another 17 points and 15 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year.

Holicky went just 1-of-5 shooting on three point attempts however as the Mustangs shot a season low 18 percent (3-of-17) from deep as a group. Lauren Hedlund added 13 points and six rebounds in just 19 minutes on the court while Caleigh Rodning scored 16 while going 10-of-10 from the free throw line.

After holding Bemidji State to just 2-of-6 on three pointers in the first quarter, the Beavers’ offense opened up in the second as they shot 66 percent from the field with 4-of-7 shooting from behind the three point line to end the first half. BSU had 29 second quarter points while the Mustangs had five turnovers and attempted just 10 shots in the quarter.

With 3:13 to play in the game’s opening half, Taylor Holicky converted an and-one opportunity to get the Mustangs back within five points with BSU ahead 33-28. The Beavers procceeded to reel off six straight points as part of a 17-3 run that included three straight made three pointers from Aimee Pelzer. Pelzer hit two of her threes in the final twenty seconds to give BSU a twenty-point 50-30 halftime advantage.

Southwest Minnesota State’s offense woke up out of the break as SMSU went 8-of-16 from the field in the third quarter. Bemidji State’s offense remained productive however as the Beavers carved out a 26 point lead (their largest of the game) with 3:35 to play in the quarter.

SMSU held the Beavers to 3-of-11 shooting (27 percent) in the final quarter but couldn’t muster enough offense as the Mustangs went 0-of-9 from three point range in the final quarter in suffering their 11th loss of the season by 11 or more points.

The Mustangs will return to action next weekend as they begin a stretch of four consecutive home games against Concordia-St. Paul on Friday night at 6 p.m., followed by a game Saturday against Minnesota State Mankato at 5 p.m.
