PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Late first half run lifts Wabasso over Dawson-Boyd

Wabasso's Alison Benz drives in the first half against Dawson-Boyd. The Rabbits won 70-31.

WABASSO – The Wabasso Rabbits (9-4) picked up their third straight win Thursday by defeating Dawson-Boyd (7-8) 70-31. The Rabbits were able to turn what was a close game into a blowout thanks to a strong defensive performance.

“Our pressure started to wear them down,” said Wabasso coach Neil Dolan. “We made some mistakes in the second half. I think we wore them down with our depth. We’re a long and athletic team. We got in the passing lanes and ran the floor.”

It was a snail’s pace to start the game as neither team could find the bottom of the net early. At the 15-minute mark a Gina Goblirisch 3-pointer marked the first made field goal of the game to give the Rabbits a 4-1 lead.

Following the made 3-pointer the Blackjacks went on a 7-0 run to take a 8-4 lead. The Rabbits quickly answered back by going on a 11-0 run to take a 15-8 lead.

After a made free throw from Alex Sather the Blackjacks cut Wabasso’s lead to 28-20. The Rabbits then went on a 21-0 run that spanned into the second half to build a 49-20 lead. It was a lead that was too much to overcome for an offense that struggled to handle Wabasso’s press.

“They came out and pressed us,” said Dawson-Boyd coach Justin Wager. “We struggled to get the ball up the floor. When you break the press you have to attack it and we slow played it. We didn’t have real great energy tonight.”

As a team, the Rabbits knocked down eight 3-pointers. Jenna Frank hit four of those 3-pointers and finished with 15 points. Goblirsch hit three 3-pointers and finished with nine points. Alison Benz led the Rabbits with 20 points. Madison Guetter scored 13 points and grabbed a team-leading nine rebounds.

“On offense we started off slow,” said Dolan. “Gina (Goblirisch) and Jenna (Frank) both can shoot the three. They were both on tonight. They helped open up the inside. Dawson-Boyd is a nice team. Their defense gave us some fits early on. They got some length and that gave us some trouble.”

Wabasso will be back on the hardwood Thursday when they hit the road to take on Heron Lake-Okabena.

“We just need to come out and play our game,” said Dolan. “As long as we take care of our business I think we will be fine.”

The Blackjacks will travel to Cottonwood on Thursday to take on the Lakeview Lakers.

“We have to play a little stronger and make better decisions,” said Wager. “We didn’t have it tonight and you’re going to have nights like that.”
