SMSU Wheelchair Basketball: SMSU closes out weekend tournament with two losses

COLUMBIA, Mo – The Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball team concluded play on Saturday with a pair of losses at the University of Missouri Tournament. SMSU lost 75-56 to UW-Whitewater, before falling to Missouri, 60-40. SMSU finished the two-day event with a 2-2 record after beating Arizona State and Nebraska-Omaha on Friday.

In the setback to UWW, David Evjen led the Mustangs with 21 points on 10 of 24 shooting, while teammate Walter Johnson made 9 of 13 field goals with one 3-pointer to finish with 20 points. Johnson also had a team-high 11 rebounds.

SMSU closed the game shooting 43 percent (24 of 56) from the field, including 3 of 9 from 3-point range.

In the final game of the weekend versus Missouri, Evjen and Johnson both recorded double-doubles to lead the charge. Evjen scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Johnson had 11 points and 12 rebounds.

SMSU shot 35 percent (19 of 54) from the field.

The Mustangs opened play at the University of Missouri Tournament on Friday with a victories over Arizona State (83-40) and Nebraska-Omaha (69-58).

In the win over ASU, Walter Johnson had a huge game for the Mustangs, connecting on 18 of 24 field goals to score 37 points, while grabbing eight rebounds, four steals and dishing out five assists. David Evjen (18) and John Herdon (15) also scored in double figures.

SMSU finished the game shooting 57 percent (40 of 70) from the field.

In the UNO contest, Johnson recorded a double-double with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Evjen poured in 13 points with eight rebounds and seven assists. Herdon made 10 of 17 field goals and scored 22 points.

SMSU, 11-4 overall, will now be off for the holidays before returning to action on Jan. 13-14, 2017, at a tournament in Wichita, Kan.
