SMSU VOLLEYBALL: SMSU volleyball ranked second in final AVCA polls

LEXINGTON, Ky.- The Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team finished as the second ranked team in the country according to the final American Volleyball Coaches’ Association (AVCA) Division II Top-25 coaches’ poll of the year released on Monday.

SMSU (28-6) finished with a share of the regular season NSIC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II Central Region Championship, where they were knocked off by eventual National Champions, No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul. The Mustangs have now been ranked in the AVCA Top 10 for 51 consecutive polls including a top five ranking in all 14 polls this year. SMSU has been ranked in the AVCA Top 25 for 147 consecutive polls dating back to Sept. 5, 2006.

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference continued to be well represented as Concordia-St. Paul (1), Winona State (4), Minnesota Duluth (7), and Augustana (8) each finished in the top ten while Wayne State (12) and Northern State (21) were also ranked in the final Top-25 poll of the year.

The Mustangs went 11-6 this year against nationally ranked opponents and finishes as the second ranked team in the nation for the second time in school history (SMSU also finished No. 2 in 2014).
