SMSU Volleyball: Mustangs earn 3 AVCA All-American selections

LEXINGTON, Ky.– The American Volleyball Coaches’ Association (AVCA) announced on Wednesday morning that three Southwest Minnesota State volleyball players have been named to the AVCA’s All-American teams. Taylor Reiss was named to the All-American First-Team, Eisha Oden was named Second-Team AVCA All-American, and Megan Larson was selected to the AVCA All-American Third-Team.

SMSU has now had 22 NCAA Division II All-American volleyball selections (all under head coach Terry Culhane) while Reiss becomes just the third player in Mustangs’ history to be named First-Team All-American (Erin Contons in 2007, and Devin Diedrich in 2010). Abbey Thissen (third-team) was the lone AVCA All-American selection last year.

Reiss, a sophomore outside hitter from Taunton, recorded 4.89 kills per set (3rd most in school history), 2.94 digs per set, and .53 blocks per set in 34 matches for the Mustangs this season. Reiss was also named the Northern Sun Player of the Year as well as the CCA Central Region Player of the Year after posting the fourth most kills (577) in a single season in school history. Reiss recorded the third most kills (35) in a match in SMSU history against Lewis (Ill.) back on Sept. 3.

Oden, a senior middle blocker from Marshalltown, Iowa, recorded 3.15 kills per set with .92 blocks per set on the year. Oden posted the second highest hitting percentage (.430) for a single season in SMSU history and leaves the program ranked first all-time in that category with a .347 career attack percentage. Oden also leaves Marshall ranked eighth in blocks per set (1.00).

Larson, a junior setter from Minneota, racked up the second most assists (1,517) in school history this season. Her 12.86 assists per set is also the second most in SMSU history and is the most in all of Division II this season. Larson was named the Northern Sun’s Setter of the Week on two occasions this year and currently ranks third in career assists (4,111) and third in career assists per set (10.99).

Reiss, Oden, and Larson each received All-NSIC First-Team recognition earlier this year and were each named to the NCAA Central Region All-Tournament team for their performances in the Central Region Tournament this past weekend. Larson and Reiss were also named to the CCA’s All-American teams earlier this week.
