Prep Girls Hockey: Tigers take 55 shots, take down St. Peter, 2-1

MARSHALL – The Marshall girls hockey team had plenty of scoring chances during their game against the St. Peter Bulldogs. The Tigers capitalized on two of those chances, defeating the Bulldogs 2-1 Saturday afternoon.

As a team, Marshall outshot the Bulldogs 55-14.

The first period was tight, as neither team could find the back of the net to start. Marshall outshot St. Peter 21-0 in the period while freshman Alexis Moat held the Bulldogs scoreless in goal for the Tigers.

In the second period, the Tigers got on the board when sophomore forward Sydney Mauch pushed the puck in to give Marshall a 1-0 lead. Later in the second, Marshall went up 2-0 thanks to a goal from Tessa Coudron.

The Bulldogs cut the deficit to 2-1 with a minute left in the third, but the Tigers held St. Peter in check the rest of the way to earn their fourth victory in a row.

Marshall coach Kevin Schroeder said he was happy with scoring chances his team earned throughout the game.

“I think it started with our forecheck. We put a lot of pressure on their defense and we created opportunities,” said Schroeder. “They gave us a few openings and we knew they had a good goalie that could cover a lot of net, so we tried using our defensemen on the offensive zone. The biggest thing was pouncing on the rebounds and crashing at the net.”

Moat and eighth-grader Emma Klenken split the time in front of the net for the Tigers, with Klenken stopping 13 shots on goal in two periods of work.

Schroeder said he wanted his team to stay even-keeled while maintaining a high level of intensity.

“We talked about being disciplined, do what you’re supposed to do and stay in position,” said Schroeder. “For the most part for about two and a half periods that’s what we did.”

Coudron said their ability to forecheck led to scoring opportunities.

“We were forechecking really hard and passing and cycling in the zone,” said Coudron. “We were trying to get those passes out high and once they did, they just went in.”

Coudron added their key defensively was staying calm in the zone and making precise passes.

“We were just relaxed,” said Coudron. “We were really passing to the point and getting the puck out of the zone as fast as we could with good breakout passes.”

Schroeder said their biggest takeaway is gaining confidence as a team, especially when playing more challenging teams.

“We have to prove that we can skate with the energy that it takes,” said Schroeder. “I think before this we weren’t really sure that we could when we played against really good teams and I think we skated stride for stride tonight. That and being physical as we need to be against the other teams.”

Marshall (4-2) will face Luverne on Tuesday.
