PREP FOOTBALL: 2016 Marshall Independent All-Area Football Second-Team Defense

Nicky Ektanitphong (Marshall – DB)

Ektanitphong recorded 15 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, to go along with one forced fumble and four passes broken up this season. Offensively, Ektanitphong had 13 catches and was second on the team with 288 yards receiving and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 205 yards for two touchdowns.

Trenton Bahn (Lakeview – LB)

Bahn finished the year with 53 tackles (six tackles for loss). He also recorded two interceptions and a fumble recovery. On offense, he caught 12 passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns.

Austin Kosen (Lakeview – LB)

Kosen was around the ball often as a junior in 2016. His 91 tackles were sixth-most in the area and included eight tackles for loss. He added two fumble recoveries and a sack.

Colton Taylor (Wabasso – DB)

Colton Taylor finished tied for second in the area with five interceptions, which tied with his brother for the lead on the Rabbits. On offense, he caught a team-high 21 passes for 306 yards and three TDs.

Cooper Taylor (Wabasso  – DB)

Like his twin brother, Cooper Taylor tied for second in the area with five interceptions. Offensively, the wide receiver caught 18 balls for a team-high 371 yards and four touchdowns.

Alec Bueltel (Minneota – DL)

Bueltel finished his senior season with 56 tackles and two sacks. He added two forced fumbles on the season. On offense, he blocked for the area’s top passers and one of the area’s top rushers.

Nick Antony (Canby – LB)

Antony led the Canby Lancers this season with 92 tackles, which finished fifth in the area. He also hauled in two interceptions. Antony also helped out on offense. He had 44 rushes for 210 yards and five touchdowns. He caught eight passes for 56 yards and a touchdown as well.

Cole Bassett (MCC – DB)

Bassett was a top defensive player for the Rebels, finishing with 51 tackles and two interceptions. He also added one sack and a forced fumble. On offense, he led MCC in receiving with 15 catches for 212 yards and four touchdowns. He also added 623 yards and five touchdowns on the ground in 2016.

Austin Friese (YME – LB)

Friese was one of the stalwarts of the YME Sting’s defensive unit. The senior linebacker recorded 67 tackles and a team-high three interceptions. He also added five sacks, which tied for the team lead and was tied for third in the area. On offense, he led the team with 536 rushing yards on 116 carries, along with a team-best 12 receptions.

Brandon Schmidt (YME – LB)

Schmidt led YME in tackles with 81 this season, which was good for ninth in the area. He also finished his senior season with two sacks on a team that advanced to the Section 3AA semifinals after winning just one game a season ago. The­ all-district player also blocked on the offensive line for a team that scored 18.5 points per game.

Jordan Odegard (YME – LB)

The senior Odegard recently wrapped up his third season as a defensive starter for YME. Odegard recorded 30 tackles during the 2016 season for a defensive unit that held opponents to just 15.3 points per game. On offense, Odegard finished with 178 rushing yards, 62 receiving yards and five total touchdowns.
