MARSHALL – The Marshall boys hockey team got going on the offensive end right away as the Tigers used two first-period goals to lift themselves to a 7-2 victory over the Windom Eagles Tuesday night.

The Tigers struck first in quick fashion as Mason Plante received the pass from Mason Penske for the game’s first goal in the opening 45 seconds to give Marshall a 1-0 lead.

Six minutes later, Marshall made it 2-0 thanks to a slapshot from Jackson Luther that sped past Windom’s goaltender.

In the second period, the Tigers continued the offensive onslaught as Marshall scored four goals in the period. Chase VanDeVere got things started with a goal to make it 3-0 Marshall before Dylan Criquet-Danielson punched in a power-play goal to push the lead to 4-0.

Windom answered seconds later with a goal of its own to make it 4-1, but Marshall’s Jack Boerboom netted a goal to regain the four-goal advantage for the Tigers. A second goal from Plante pushed the score to 6-1 in favor of Marshall after the second intermission.

The third period saw another goal from Boerboom to make it 7-1 before the Eagles got one last goal to bring it to the 7-2 final.

Marshall coach Michael Weiss said he liked the way the offense found opportunities to get the puck on net throughout the game.

“Offensively, we got the puck a little bit better than we have our last few games and capitalized on a few of our chances,” said Weiss.

Trey Nelson earned the victory in net for the Tigers, stopping 18 shots. Marshall outshot Windom as a team, 46-20.

Plante said despite allowing just two goals on 20 shots, they have some work left on the defensive end.

“Defensively, we’ve got some work to do. We’ve got a few games coming up where we need to get pucks deep when we can and not let them score or even take a chance.”

Marshall (3-4) will face Redwood Valley on Thursday.

Weiss said their biggest takeaway is continuing to work hard as a unit.

“I just think we need to keep working hard and be the team we want to be,” said Weiss. “Just continue to do the little things that we do every day and we’ll be fine.”
