MARSHALL  - The Marshall Tigers’ boys hockey team took on the Luverne Cardinals on Tuesday night where the Tigers fell to the Cardinals 3-0.

The first period was a shutout for both teams, as the defense was too strong and the offense wasn’t strong enough to put either team on the board. Each team had their penalties and the Tigers had their chance at a power-play goal but couldn’t capitalize.

Luverne came ready to fight in the second period and earned their first goal of the night with 12:03 left in the second period. The Cardinals were not ready to back down as they followed up with their second goal of the night with 6:38 left in the second period.

Marshall had the opportunity to take advantage of a five-on-three power play late in the second period but Luverne defense was too tough to beat and the Tigers trailed 2-0 at the end of the second period.

When the third period began, the Cardinals took advantage of a power play and scored their third and final goal of the night to extend their lead to 3-0 over the Tigers. The Tigers had some more shots on goal and goalie Trey Nelson blocked some shots of his own, but Marshall couldn’t come back from a 3-0 deficit and fell to the Cardinals.

The Tigers marked up 16 shots on goal for the night with Dylan Criquet-Danielson and Jon Bell leading the team with three SOG each. The Marshall Tigers had six power plays of their own but couldn’t capitalize on any of those opportunities. The goalie for the night, Nelson, blocked 30 shots and had a .909 save percentage.

With Tuesday’s loss, the Tigers have an overall record of 2-2. The Tigers are scheduled to play the New Ulm Eagles on Thursday in New Ulm.
