TRACY – The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers took on the Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers on Friday in each team’s first game of the season. The Chargers came out with the win over the Panthers, 70-33.

WWG got on the board early in the first half, but Moses Dolan from TMB was fouled soon after the first basket and made both free throws to bring the score to 2-2.

The Chargers clearly didn’t want a close game and Andrew Quade stepped up for his team to move away from a 4-4 tie with a 3-pointer to extend his team’s lead to 7-3 over TMB.

Quade wasn’t ready to slow down as he followed up with another 3-pointer to extend his team’s lead to six over the Panthers. WWG would hold the lead for the remainder of the game, but not without a fight.

The Chargers lead over the Panthers 16-4 when TMB took a timeout with 12:42 remaining in the first half. Shortly after that timeout, Spencer Smith for TMB marked up his team’s first 3-pointer of the night with 11:09 left in the first half.

Tyson Elzenga wanted to extend WWG’s lead even further, marking up another 3-pointer for the Chargers. Elzenga’s 3-pointer put WWG up 31-12 with 6:17 left in the first half.

WWG stayed hot for the remainder of the first half as Kyle Kuehl marked up another 3-pointer for the Chargers. Chargers held the lead 34-16 with 4:00 left in the first half.

TMB wasn’t ready to quit, though, as they capitalized on a WWG turnover with 1:46 left in the first half. TMB still trailed 35-20.

WWG held the lead and the scoreboard read 39-20 at the half.

The Chargers earned their first points of the second half off of a turnover by the Panthers. WWG was not ready to slow down in the second half as they marked up several 3-pointers in an attempt to seal in the win over TMB.

TMB marked up their own 3-pointer with three minutes left in the second half on behalf of Smith. With the Panthers not able to capitalize, the Chargers head home with the win.

Impressive on the court for TMB was Smith, who had 17 points on the night while Dolan marked up eight points with three assists for the Panthers.

Dominant on the court for the Chargers was Anthony Ross with 19 points and two assists while Quade marked up 12 points, all from 3-pointers.

WWG coach Derrick Jenniges was impressed with his team’s performance on the court on Friday.

“You never know what to expect on the first night. I’m just happy that our guys came and played with a high level of energy,” said Jenniges.

The Chargers are scheduled to play Wabasso today.

“We know Wabasso had a good football season so they’re riding that momentum, so we don’t know what to expect,” said Jenniges.

TMB coach Rick Haberman has a positive outlook on the season after TMB’s initial loss to WGG.

“I thought we were very aggressive and I thought we played very hard,” said Haberman of the Panthers’ performance on the court on Friday.

TMB has three practice days until they meet with Pipestone on Thursday.

“We want to fine tune some things on offense, but we’re only two weeks into the season so we need to continue to grow together as a team.” said Haberman.
