COTTONWOOD – The Lakeview Lakers came back from an eight-point deficit with just four minutes left to defeat the Minneota Vikings 54-52 on Tuesday night.

Darrien Wallin stole an errant Minneota pass and went the length of the court with less than five seconds left in the game to break the 52-all tie.

“My teammates set me up,” said Wallin. “Jake (Werner) pressured them and I saw the bad pass, picked it off and hoped for the best.”

Thomas Hennen heaved a half-court shot at the buzzer for Minneota, but it fell short.

Minneota coach Dave Busselman credited the Lakers’ rebounders in the win.

“They beat us up on the boards in the second half,” said Busselman. “Also defensively, they turned up the pressure on us a little bit. We showed some youth by not running an offense. When we ran some things we had some good sets out of it and had some success.”

The Vikings maintained control of the game most of the way, building a nine-point lead shortly before half.

Freshman Logan Sussner had a solid first half, scoring 15 points to give the Vikings a 29-21 lead going into intermission.

The Lakers took a lead for a short time in the second half after Isaac Loe hit a 3-pointer just five minutes into the second half.

However, Thomas Hennen scored four of his game high 21 points to take the lead right back for the Vikings.

Lakeview’s defense kept the pressure on and was able to come out with the win.

Lakers coach Jared Keaveny knows his team needs to play with intensity the whole game.

“We need to develop some consistency,” said Keaveny. “We can’t rely on this type of play. We coast for three quarters of the game and then decide we are going to work. We need to find a more consistent effort the whole game.”

Wallin led the evenly-balanced scoring attack with 11 for the Lakers. Jarod Goepferich was second with 10 points. Tate Varpness and Loe chipped in with nine each. Jake Werner added eight points.

Goepferich grabbed 12 boards for the Lakers and Wallin had five steals on defense.

Thomas Hennen led the Vikings with 21 points and five boards. Sussner recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Both teams travel to Okabena on Friday to play in the Candy Cane Classic. Minneota takes on Heron Lake-Okabena and Lakeview faces Westbrook-Walnut Grove.

“They (WWG) are going to throw a lot at us and they are going to work hard,” said Keaveny. “Their coach does a great job down there and we need to find a way to come out strong right out of the gates.”
