Marshall cruises past Redwood valley

MARSHALL – The Marshall boys basketball team pressed its feet on the offensive gas pedal and never let go, defeating the Redwood Valley Cardinals 82-56 on Tuesday night.

The Tigers got out of the gate quickly, taking a 14-7 lead. MHS later added to that lead with a 9-3 run to go up 25-10, before capping off another run with a pair of alley-oops to extend its lead to 20 at 36-16.

The Cardinals then cut the deficit to 11, 39-28, before both teams went into the locker rooms.

Marshall coach Travis Carroll said he was pleased with their unselfishness with the basketball throughout the game. The Tigers recorded 17 assists on the game.

“We shared the ball at a pretty good level in the first half. When our guys share the ball at a level like that, we can cause some difficulties for the other team,” said Carroll. “We see areas of improvement of looking to maintain that longer, because we had a nice stretch before giving up a little bit in the first half.”

In the second half, the Cardinals cut it to single digits at nine, but Marshall quickly got a basket on the other end to reclaim a double-digit lead.

Just like they did in the first half, the Tigers offense never relented, as Marshall posted a 18-point advantage at 67-49 with five minutes left. Marshall then pushed its lead to 75-59 before icing the game at the free-throw line.

Weston Baker Magrath led the way for the Tigers with 20 points on 9 of 10 shooting while Zach Bloemker added 17 and Mitch Sueker chipped in 15. Baker Magrath led the way in rebounds as well with 15 to record a double-double while Sueker led in assists with four.

Baker Magrath said their key tonight on the defensive end was being familiar with the Cardinal players.

“Knowing their personnel and key players was big for us,” said Baker Magrath. “Just to know their tendencies and what they do was key tonight.”

Carroll said they need to learn to defend better without committing a foul.

“We needed to a better job of defending without fouling. We committed a lot of fouls in the first half,” said Carroll. “We did a better job of not fouling in the second half, and defending in the half court and got some stops that put us in situations where we could create opportunities for us.”

Carroll added their biggest takeaway is defending as well as controlling the rebound battle.

“Do a better job of defending without fouling. We did win the rebounding battle but did leave some boards out there that we could have had. We also need to look to communicate better and defend better in the half court.”

Marshall (1-0) will face Worthington on Friday.
