MARSHALL The Marshall girls hockey offense came out firing and stayed that way against the Morris/Benson Area Storm, compiling five goals en route to a 5-0 shutout victory on Saturday in the Marshall Thanksgiving Tournament.

The win gave Marshall a third-place finish in the tournament and its first victory of the season.

Marshall coach Kevin Schroeder said their main focus during the game was not giving the puck away, and was pleased with the result.

“We just talked about puck control. Take care of the puck, don’t throw it around, and for the most part we did that,” said Schroeder. “I think we got caught a little bit throwing things at the net, but I think the big part of the game was puck control.”

The Tigers struck quickly in the first period, with junior forward Rachel VanKeulen scoring just 44 seconds into the game to give Marshall a 1-0 lead.

Marshall made it 2-0 later in the period when senior forward Tessa Coudron fired a shot past the goaltender.

In the second period, junior defenseman Courtney Mauch found the back of the net to make it 3-0 Marshall. A few minutes later, her sister Sydney got in on the scoring action with a goal to extend the lead to 4-0.

A goal in the third period from junior forward Amaya Strivens pushed the advantage to 5-0.

Schroeder said he was happy with the defensive effort from his team.

“Our forecheck was working well for us,” said Schroeder. “The forecheck is one of the best parts of a defense and that was the main focus: pressure on the forecheck and defense being tough on the blue line. I think the first two periods we did a good job of that.”

Marshall controlled the shots on goal advantage throughout the game, outshooting the Storm 32-8.

VanKeulen said she was happy with their ability to get a lot of shots on goal.

“We worked on keeping our third forward high in the zone and that helped us keep the pressure on them,” said VanKeulen. “When we were in the offensive zone, we kept it there, and were able to take a lot of shots because of it.”

Schroeder thought their biggest takeaway was gaining confidence as a team.

“I think that’s one thing we can take away is having a lot of confidence now heading into conference play,” said Schroeder. “Just bringing that type of intensity and being strong on the forecheck and the blue line. We were pretty confident in our goalies both games; it’s nice to have confidence in two goalies. Also it was nice to establish a third line. They got a lot of playing time and it was good to see them move the puck around like they should.”

Marshall (1-2) will hit the road to face Worthington next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
