Entertainment — a look back

July 30, 2014
By Ted Rowe , Marshall Independent

Maybe it shows my age, but I do believe that some of the best stage plays/musicals and movies came from when I was in my teens and that means back in the 1950s. Of course there were great films and theater productions before that. One of my earlier favorite movies (1944) has a Minnesota connection: "Meet Me In St. Louis" starring Judy Garland. Judy, as many of you may recall, was born in Park Rapids and was named Frances Ethel Gumm before she changed her name. Judy was most famous for her acting and singing in the movie, "The Wizard of Oz" (1939 film adaptation of a 1902 Broadway musical based on a 1900 book by the same name by L. Frank Baum.) Probably more than you ever wanted to know! Oh, Fiddlesticks! I get carried away now and then.
