The last time my hair had bangs was in the mid-1990s. After letting my perm grow out, I was tired of teasing my bangs into submission, or my lame attempt at replicating the "mall hair" look that was the style when I was in high school. I let my hair grow straight and long; no layers whatsoever.
Somewhere in the midst of grad school, my hair reached my waist. I would get a few inches cut off but not too much. I wanted to keep my long, straight hair for some reason. There were days where my hair would look somewhat decent (I had low standards) and other days when I just couldn't deal with the long, straggly hair.
Despite my high hopes for rocking the long hair, I decided to make a change back in 2007. Now I'm not one to spend a lot of time dong my hair (which is probably why my long hair would look downright pathetic on most days). So I took the plunge and lopped it all off. The last time I had short hair was when I was in eighth grade. Cutting my hair gave it a little more bounce and style for some reason. And then people complimented me on the new hairdo. And I basically have had the same look every time I've gotten a haircut since then.
Let's back up to my lifetime of hair. I once actually had some curl to my hair when I was 2 or 3. That didn't last long. It got straight and long, and my mom would put it in pigtails. I've had short hair, permed hair shaped like Little Orphan Annie, dry damaged permed hair (thanks to using too much of a product called A Touch Of Sun; let's just say I used more than a "touch"), colored hair and braided hair (when I actually somewhat learned how to French-braid my hair). It's been a lifetime battle to have "passable" good hair.
After getting annoyed when my hair would fall in my face while doing exercises at kettlebells, I decided to finally get my long overdue haircut on Thursday. I was contemplating getting bangs again. It's been a good number of years. What if I hate them? What if they look goofy on me? And I wanted to get more hair cut off than I usually go (might as well get my money's worth), I decided to go for it. I was assured that I didn't have to do anything to my hair; I could even take care of this style. If bangs looked goofy on me, so be it. I have headbands to pull my hair back. It'll grow.
It now feels so much lighter. No hair dangling in my eyes when I'm doing a Pilates plank. I'll try to make my hair look somewhat decent. Maybe even try a product. (what?)
