MINNEOTA - Mass of Christian Burial for Edmund Sumerfelt, 88, of Marshall, formerly of Minneota, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Edward Catholic Church in Minneota. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at Rehkamp-Horvath Funeral Home in Minneota. Burial will be at St. Edward Catholic Cemetery in Minneota. Military rites by U.S. American Legion Post 199 of Minneota and VFW Post 5334 of Minneota.

He died Saturday, June 28, 2014, at the Prairie Home Hospice House in Marshall.

Edmund Sumerfelt

Edmund A. Sumerfelt was born March 28, 1926, in Taunton to Alexander and Domicilia (Keilb) Sumerfelt. He grew up and attended school in Taunton. Edmund served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He flew on a B17 "Flying Fortress" as a flight engineer and machine gunner. He flew with the 2nd emergency rescue squadron. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Minneota. On Jan. 15, 1947, he was united in marriage to Vivian Ligneel. The couple made their home and raised their family on a farm near Minneota. Edmund never lost his passion for flying. He was proud of his service and belonged to the American Legion and VFW. Edmund and Vivian were very devoted to each other. For the last couple of years, they lived at Hill Street Place in Marshall.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian of Minneota; daughter Carol Sumerfelt of Minneapolis; son Larry (and Lisa) of Minneota, son Steven (and Darlene) of Allen, Texas; three grandchildren; sisters Virginia, Dorothy and Audrey; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.
