A group of area residents, including donors to the Avera Cancer Institute Marshall, got a chance to take a "hard-hat tour" of the cancer institute construction on Friday afternoon. Members of the tour group, including Tim Quist, Robert L. and Phyllis Carr, Chris Moede and Avera Marshall Foundation Executive Director Gordon Crow, gathered inside the concrete vault where radiation treatments will take place. Avera Marshall Environmental Services Director Kevin Schroeder, at left, explained how the radiation therapy equipment will be brought into the vault in pieces and put together in place. Schroeder said the cancer institute hopes to offer its first radiation treatments starting in mid-January. The Independent will feature the cancer institute in an upcoming Weekender edition.
