MARSHALL -- Carl Douglas tossed a complete game shutout Saturday in Marshall's opening-round game in the Class 3AA tournament, as the Tigers beat Redwood Valley 8-0. Douglas allowed just four hits while striking out seven and walking just one batter.
Tigers coach Chace Pollock knew that Douglas was capable of delivering such a performance.
"He did a great job for us," Pollock said. "He was throwing strikes and competing. Everything about it was good and that was good to see."
Marshall's Carl Douglas hurls one toward the plate during Marshall's 8-0 win over Redwood Valley. Douglas tossed a complete game shutout and had seven strikeouts.
With a talented pitching staff like Marshall's, teams have trouble getting a beat on pitches. Marshall also features a tough defense behind whoever is on the mound.
Douglas was quick to credit his defense.
"It's just nice knowing that my defense is going to be there," Douglas said. "We have a lot of trust in them. We don't make a lot of errors. All you have to do is throw strikes and we should be able to get a win."
Brad Bahlmann lead the team offensively as he had four RBI on just one hit and scored one run. Connor Winkleman and Bryce Johnson both drove in one run and scored one while each had two hits.
The Tigers also got one RBI from Noah Winkleman, as he went 3-for-4 from the plate.
Jordan Opdahl, Logan Zaske, Colten Minkel, and Zac Ward tallied the hits for Redwood Valley.
The Cardinals have struggled with the Tigers this season, losing their previous matchups in a doubleheader 15-0 and 23-3.
Redwood Valley finished with just one win on the season and coach Aaron Ferrier managed to find some positives.
"We did a better job in the field," Ferrier said. "We could have made things a little bit more interesting with a few good swings of the bat in key situations, but overall we we're better in the field and I thought our pitching was solid. Marshall's just a good hitting club."
Marshall will take on the winner of the New London/Spicer vs. Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop matchup at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
