Yellow Medicine East finished second as a team on both the boys and the girls side. The boys were lead by Mitch McCosh, who shot an 82, and the girls top scorer was Leah Jeseritz with a 99. The girls finished with a 421 while the boys shot a 342.
The Sting, with the exception of some of the girls playing a practice round earlier in the week, weren't familiar with the course at Marshall, making the performances even more impressive.
"We (the girls) shot a little better than average, but not a lot better," YME coach Mike Gaffney said. Our girls really played how we expected them to play. Our biggest thing was we just weren't familiar. Overall, we were pleased."
On the boys side, the top two golfers shot higher than they usually do, but were still good enough to help the team qualify for section play.
YME co-coach Dave Guertin was pleased with how deep the low scores came in.
"Our number six golfer, Jacob Guertin, came in about five strokes lower than what he usually shoots," Lecy said. "Grant Lalim, our number five, was four strokes better. We've been stressing all year that those five and six spots are important. It's exciting for us as coaches and exciting for the kids."
McCosh finished fourth overall in individual play.
The DB boys were happy with the subsection win, but knew they could also play better.
The coaching staff is going to work with the players to make adjustments before section play.
"I'm sure we'll hear about it on the van ride back," Dawson-Boyd coach Dave Baldwin said. "It was just little things like course management issues and swing issues. We work on that stuff every day anyway. We'll have to get more details when we break down the round."
DB will play its section tournament at Benson Golf club. Thoen, the second place finisher in this tournament, knows it's going to be a challenge.
"It's a very tight course," Thoen said. "there are plenty of tree-lined fairways, so drives are going to be really important. We're going to have to play better as a team than we did today."
Cameron Kemen of Dawson-Boyd finished with an 88 while Spencer Erickson shot a 90. He was followed by Dalton Palmer with a 93 and Jared Monson finished with a 100.
Charles Blue carded an 85 for the YME boys. He was followed by Jacob Guertin (86), Grant Lalim (89), Same Jans (92) and Mason Frerichs (100).
On the girls side, Erica Moritz finished with a 102 to go with a 109 from Kylie Ramirez, a 111 from Cassie Thielen, a 121 from Britanna Raddatz and a 125 from Megan Larson.
The Canby boys and girls also competed in the subsection tournament, placing 6th and third respectively. Dylan Smith lead the Canby boys side with a 90 while Landon Anderson shot a 96. Matt Slaba shot a 107 and was followed by Jack Citrowske with a 110. Nolan Fink and Austin Polejewski rounded out the day with 111's.
On the girls side, Natalie Morris had the lowest team score with a 103 and was followed by Abbi Morris with a 107 and Jenna Huber with a 108. Mallary Fink shot a 110 while Gabby Nemitz shot a 115 and Haily Citrowske shot a 119.
Every golfer from the top two qualifying teams will play in indivdiuals in the section championships as well as the next five lowest scores for girls and eight lowest for boys.
