MARSHALL - Riley Sharbono and C.D. Douglas led the Marshall Tigers to a 68-31 victory over Dassel-Cokato, scoring 20 and 19 points respectively, in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A Section 2 Tournament on Tuesday.

With the win, the Tigers advanced to the semifinal round, where they will play Mankato East at Minnesota State University on Saturday.

Limiting the Chargers at 16 points in the first half was something that Marshall coach Travis Carroll took great pride in.

Marshall’s Drew Hmielewski scores a layup against Dassel-Cokato during the second half of a Class 3A Section 2 Tournament quarterfinal game Tuesday at Marshall High School.

"That was pretty big for us," Carroll said. "The guys did a fairly good job keeping them off the offensive boards. That was one thing that was a strength of theirs, getting offensive rebounds and we did a pretty good job of limiting their second-chance opportunities. That was big for us."

Jordan Schroeder was the second-leading scorer and rebounder for the Tigers with six points and seven rebounds. Douglas finished as the leading rebounder with eight.

Matthew Johnson finished as the leading scorer for the Chargers with 12 points. Dalton Asplin added five points.

Dassel-Cokato is a team that didn't win a game last season (0-25) and finished with four victories this season. The No. 8-seeded Chargers are heading in the right direction, but knew they were in for a monumental task Tuesday night against the top-seeded Tigers.

"We hadn't had a chance to scout them, but we knew they were a solid team," Chargers assistant coach Wade Powers said. "All we could do was prepare for it like it was any other game. You can tell these guys have put in a lot of quality time in the gym. They were passing to a spot, knowing where that person is going to cut. You can tell they've been gym rats. It's tough."

The Tigers defense held the Chargers to 28 percent shooting from the field while they shot 50 percent. They also outrebounded DC 38-19. Marshall will take on Mankato East in the next round. Marshall beat Mankato East in the previous matchup, but Schroeder knows that they are a better team this time around than the last time they played.

"We're going to have to come out with a better start," Schroeder said. "We have to come out and play like we did in the second half and move the ball around like we know how to do and hopefully it allows us to move on."
