GIRLS BASKETBALL: Vikings down Blackjacks for Camden Conference title

MINNEOTA - The Camden Conference girl's championship proved to be battle of momentum for the South's Minneota and the North's Dawson-Boyd.

The Vikings were able to break loose in the second half to build a solid lead, outlasting the Blackjacks to secure the 55-48 win. Minneota's victory earned the team its fourth consecutive Camden Conference title. "It is a great accomplishment for us to win it four years in a row," said Taylor Reiss.

Despite the victory, the Vikings struggled throughout the game to counter the Blackjacks defense and surrendered a 20 point lead, allowing Dawson-Boyd back within the striking distance as time expired. "I going to give it to Dawson," said Chad Johnston. "We had a slow start tonight offensively because of what they did against us on defense and it took us awhile to recognize that."

The Vikings entered the championship reeling from the teams first loss since January of 2013, aiming to get back on track. "That was the theme going into this game tonight," said Johnston. "This is our second game in the last week and half that we didn't execute very well and its not the time of year to do that."

Minneota jumped out to an early lead in the first-half behind a three-point field goal from Megan Larson followed up by a quick two from Taylor Reiss off an offensive rebound. Reiss led the Vikings with 25 points on the night.

The Blackjacks responded with a shot from beyond arc from Justine Lee and back-to-back lay-ups from Lee and Katarina Kuhlmann to capture the lead from the Vikings. Both girls would end the night with 18 points each. Shelby Corbin knocked-down a three-pointer to regain the lead for the Vikings and grab the 27-18 advantage entering the second half.

Both teams made a series of short runs, but the Vikings were able to build a 54-34 lead late in the half. The Blackjacks refused to back-down, finding a second-wind to battle back into the game. "I put the starters back in so we could on some things and we ended up going 0-4 from the free throw long and allowed them easy buckets," said Johnston. "Good thing time ran out."

The Vikings were able to hold onto their lead and close-out the game with a 55-48 victory representing the South half of the Camden Conference, earning a perfect 16-0 record in conference play this season. "If you don't perform, someone is going to beat you," said Johnston. "These guys made this a closer game than we wanted it to be."
