MENS BASKETBALL: Mustangs drop NSIC tilt versus University of Mary

BISMARCK, N.D. - The University of Mary closed the final 2:20 with an 11-3 run to defeat Southwest Minnesota State University 74-65 in men's basketball on Friday night.

SMSU drops to 15-10 overall, 12-7 NSIC, while U-Mary improves to 7-17, 5-14 NSIC.

Shaun Condon scored a game-high and career-high 23 points for SMSU, playing against the team where he started his collegiate career. Condon finished the night connecting on 8 of 14 shots, including 5 of 11 from 3-point range. Nick Smith was the only other Mustang to reach double figure scoring with 12 points.

SMSU shot just 39 percent from the field and committed 16 turnovers.

U-Mary led 26-17 with 6 minutes and 29 seconds remaining before the Mustangs rallied to regain the lead at 31-29 with 1:49 left in the half on a 3-pointer by Condon. The Marauders quickly regained the lead and held a 35-33 halftime lead.

SMSU held a 38-35 advantage early in the second half, but U-Mary answered with a 10-2 run to build a 45-40 lead and never trailed again, building the lead to 61-54 with 6:12 left. SMSU closed the gap to 63-62 with 2:20 remaining following one of two free throws by Vinard Birch, but U-Mary closed the game making 11 free throws in the final 1:51 to seal the victory. U-Mary won the game despite not making a field goal in the final 4:20 of the contest.

SMSU will play its final road game of the regular season tonight versus Minot State starting at 6 p.m.
