MINNEOTA - There is a reason games aren't played on paper.

Canby picked up a 75-67 Camden Conference win over Minneota/Lincoln HI on Friday night despite shooting 9 of 24 from the free throw line and allowing the Vikings to shoot 11 of 28 from behind the 3-point arc.

Michael Slaba led the Lancers with 24 points and had 11 assists to record a double-double. He had plenty of help from Kristian Lepkke and Zach Nuy, who each put in 13 points to go with 12 more from Josh Gallegos and 11 from McKinley Johansen.

Turnovers were also key. The Vikings, who committed 20 turnovers compared to 16 Canby miscues, did the majority of their damage in the first half.

"We got sloppy there for a few possessions and, then, we missrf a few shots," Minneota/Lincoln HI coach Dave Busselman said. "I don't think our feet were quite underneath us. You don't turn the ball over against a team like this on the other side."

The loss to the Lancers was the fourth game played by the Vikings in the last five days, in which they went 3-2.

Minneota/Lincoln HI (17-6 overall, 8-6 Camden South) was forced to play catchup the entire game as it went on a 10-5 run at the end of the first half to cut the score to 38-35 and trim the Canby lead down to seven at 68-61 with just more than 2 minutes to go.

The Lancers were able to draw some fouls and get to the free-throw line, helping them stretch the lead out to a safe margin.

Minneota/Lincoln HI's Dylan Tolk, who finished the game with 18 points, hit a 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds to cut the score to 74-67, but the damage was already done.

Canby ended up shooting 4 of 14 from 3-point range, but did most of that damage in the first half before turning to the paint in the second.

"Other teams look at us as more of an inside team, so they were trying to take away our inside game in the first half," Slaba said. "As we stretched the lead, they started to overplay on that, so we decided to attack the floor and get to the inside. Our guys do a real good job of getting the ball, posting up and getting it in."

The Lancers' move inside helped them shoot 59 percent from the field before the game's end.

They also outrebounded the Vikings 35-25 and ended their regular season on a seven-game win streak to finish 20-4 overall and 11-3 in Camden South play.

"We had a pretty good half, offensively, in the second half," Canby coach Jon Hanson said. "That was nice to see. Our big guys were struggling in the first half, but did a much better job in the second half. You have to have the inside and outside game to be consistent."

Minneota/Lincoln HI will finish out its regular season at Wabasso on Tuesday night before taking on Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in the opening round of the Class 2A Section 3 Tournament Feb. 22. Canby will take on Lakeview in the Class A Section 3 Tournament on Feb. 22.
