GIRLS BASKETBALL: MHS overcomes shooting in victory

PIPESTONE - The Class 3A, No. 4-ranked Marshall girls basketball team survived a 34-percent first-half shooting performance to defeat Pipestone Area 73-33 on Tuesday night to stay perfect in the Southwest Conference.

Marshall head coach Dan Westby said a slow start allowed the Arrows to keep it close in the first half.

"We didn't come out and play with a lot of urgency, and Pipestone did," said Westby. "You could see those kids looking more and more comfortable. We had to scrap and claw to get our way back in it."

The Tigers (19-1 overall, 11-0 SWC) took a 34-25 lead into the half and came out a new team in the second half.

"We talked a lot about effort," Westby said. "We didn't feel that we had the effort that we needed. To compound matters, we shot poorly in the first half.

"Some of that was due to the fact that we weren't cutting hard and we were making it easy for Pipestone Area."

A different combination of players in the second half sparked Marshall, keeping the Arrows off the board for more than 10 minutes.

"We found a rotation of five kids that really put together a stretch on both ends of the floor," said Westby.

Hannah Bennett, Haley Bennett, Marah Mulso, Lexi Saugstad and Sarah Buysse put together a solid stretch that allowed Marshall to build an insurmountable lead.

"That combination really gave us a lift in the second half," Westby said.

The Tigers were led by Mulso and Hannah Bennett, who each had 17 points. Buysse scored 10 points while Kenzie Beekman and Haley Bennett added nine and eight respectively.

Marshall hosts Willmar in a section showdown on Thursday.

"We have a big section game against Willmar," said Westby. "Hopefully, we saw that we need to come out and be ready to play right away instead of waiting to see what the opposition has to offer."
