GIRLS BASKETBALL: Saugstad ties 3-point record as MHS routs Windom Area

MARSHALL - Less than a week removed from the Super Bowl, the Marshall Tigers left the Windom Area Eagles feeling like the Denver Broncos on Thursday night, cruising to an 82-35 victory behind 21 points from Lexi Saugstad.

Saugstad dropped seven three-pointers- five in the first half- which tied a school record for most three-pointers by one player in a game.

"We shot it well," Marshall coach Dan Westby said. "Anytime you shoot it that well, everything else goes that much easier. I think that was a big part of what we did tonight."

Marshall’s Lexi Saugstad controls the ball while being surrounded by four Windom Area defenders during a Southwest Conference game Thursday at Marshall High School. Saugstad hit seven 3-point field goals to tie the Tigers’ single-game record.

Saugstad's seven three-pointers were half of the team's total as they shot 14-26 (51 percent) from behind the arc. Hannah Bennett and Kenzie Beekman also had productive nights, putting in 17 and 16 points respectively.

The Tigers used their size advantage to grab 27 rebounds and their defensive pressure helped them come away with 11 steals on the night.

Windom Area coach Jeff Huska knew his team faced a daunting task coming into the game.

"It's a tough matchup for us against Marshall," Huska said. "They're long and they're quick and they shot the three like crazy. I was dissapointed because I thought we could've competed a little bit better than we did, but they are just so good."

Rachel Sorenson was the leading scorer for the eagles with 14 points and shot 10-12 from the free throw line.

Marshall will face a tougher task in their next matchup as they play Worthington Feb. 8, a team that they beat 75-55 in the first game. That is the Trojan's lone loss of the season. They sit at 15-1 overall and 7-1 in the conference.

"We know we have to stop the drive and close out on shooters," Saugstad said. "We have to defend and focus on the defensive side and work together."
