MARSHALL - A solid defensive performance lifted Marshall to a 62-38 win over section rival Mankato East during the first round of the Fastbreak Club Holiday Tournament on Thursday.

The Tigers (6-2 overall), who preserved their sixth straight victory, limited the Cougars to 30 percent (15 of 50) shooting from the floor, including Mankato East's 0 of 12 effort from 3-point range. Meanwhile, Marshall shot 47 percent (21 of 45) from the floor, including 50 percent (7 of 14) from behind the arc.

MHS head coach Travis Carroll said his players guarded the Cougars effectively.

Marshall’s Riley Sharbono eyes the basket as Mankato East’s Gorg Alhag defends during the first round of the Fastbreak Club Holiday Tournament on Thursday at Marshall High School.

""We tried to limit Mankato East to one shot on each possession by having a hand in their face every time a shot went up," Carroll said.

Carroll was happy with the way the Tigers began the game, but stressed his desire for more consistent play.

"We played very well in the first half because we shared the ball and played solid defense," said Carroll, who guided MHS to a 40-14 lead through 18 minutes. "In the second half, I thought we needed to do a better job of communicating on defense because it wasn't as good as the first half. Hopefully, we will find more consistency against Montevideo."

Marshall cultivated a 16-0 edge in assists and held a 42-26 advantage in rebounding.

The Tigers were led by Riley Sharbono, who scored 23 points, collected 11 rebounds, created four assists and blocked one shot. The Winkelman's combined for 26 points with Reece and Noah recording nine markers apiece and Connor contributing eight more. Noah and Connor each produced three assists.

Gorg Alhag had 14 points for Mankato East (3-6 overall), which picked up 13 points from Hussein Mohamoud.

The round-robin tournament continues today at Marshall High School with the Cougars playing Tracy-Milroy-Balaton at 6 p.m. and the Tigers facing Montevideo at 7:30 p.m.

The Thunder Hawks defeated the Panthers 72-59 in the Fastbreak Club Holiday Tournament's first game Thursday.
