Show respect on game night

December 24, 2013
Marshall Independent

To the editor:

I very much enjoyed the boys basketball game Dec. 14 at Marshall High School. But, I was very disappointed to see that very few members of the Marshall varsity squad chose to respect the flag of our United States during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner. I did note that the coaches of both teams and members of the opposing team were saluting the flag properly.

I am a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and have served as State president. One of our obligations is to teach the children of the land the Pledge of Allegiance and its meaning. One of our goals is to have our youth know about the men and women who are now, and have previously served, in the armed forces in order to protect our citizens and provide a free country for all of us to enjoy. Many, many dedicated people have given their lives to ensure that we continue to have those freedoms.

I was pleased to see that many younger elementary age children standing at attention and proudly giving a heart salute during the national anthem. It seems that the young men who have worked hard to be a member of a team which represents their fine school and community would be a great asset in providing leadership and being role models to all of the people in that gymnasium that respect them.

I have always wondered why the state high school league or state coaches' associations don't use their position to instill patriotism and respect to their student athletes and the communities they play in. Would it be possible for our coaches and school leaders to use their opportunities to teach our students to render the proper respect to our country and the flag of the United States of America? I know our active duty personnel and retired veterans would be deeply honored by their show of respect.
