MARSHALL - Connor Winkelman hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Marshall boys basketball team a 34-24 lead at the half, which they turned into a 71-56 Southwest Conference win over Jackson County Central on Tuesday.

"Jackson County Central came out and played us very well," said Marshall head coach Travis Carroll. "It was important for us to get to halftime because there were definitely adjustments we had to make. Jackson is a very good basketball team."

The Tigers (3-2, 3-0 Southwest) were looking to make changes on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.

Marshall’s C.D. Douglas drives the baseline and scores two points for the Tigers despite the defensive effort of Jackson County Central’s Ryan Salzwedel in Southwest Conference action Tuesday in Marshall.

"We had to do some things offensively to try to create some easier opportunities for our guys," Carroll said. It was important we try to pressure Jackson because they have one of the better post players in the conference."

Winkelman's three at the end of the second half gave Marshall an added boost of momentum, which they were able to take advantage of in the second half.

"The first half was actually a very close half," said Carroll. "After the first couple minutes of the second half our guys really got it going and we made a nice run to lead out the second half."

Riley Sharbono led the Tigers with 20 points while C.D. Douglas added 14 points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals in the win.

Winkelman had 10 points on the night to round out the double-figure scorers for Marshall, who led 34-24 at halftime.

"It's very important to get that momentum," Carroll said. "When it's a 10 point game it can go either way. The other team can get after it right away also."

The Tigers will be on the road for their next game when they travel to Mankato to face section opponent Mankato West on Saturday.

"Mankato West is probably the team that people are looking at as the top team in the section," said Carroll. "It will be a good test for our guys to see how we compare with them."
