Marshall Independent

WINONA - Winona State shot 61.8 percent from the field during the Warriors' 81-59 win over Southwest Minnesota State in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game Saturday.

The 81 points scored by Winona State is the second most points given up by SMSU in series history and most since the 1986-87 season. The Warriors have now taken 13 of the last 14 games in the series.

The Mustangs fell to 2-7 overall, 0-5 in the NSIC; while the Warriors improved to 6-3 overall, 2-3 in the NSIC.

Winona State finished the game shooting 34 of 55, including 8 of 14 from 3-point range. The 34 field goals made by the Warriors are the most given up by SMSU this season.

Kelsey Andrist finished 7 of 8 with 16 points to lead WSU, while the Mustangs were led by Bree Holleman's 7 of 10 shooting and 16 points. She finished 2 of 4 from 3-point range to tie Tori Fink's mark for fifth most in school history with 121.

For the second straight game, SMSU allowed an opponent to shoot better than 60 percent from the floor in the first half - the Warriors finished 17 of 27 from the floor, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range.

The Mustangs turned the ball over nine times in the first half and Winona State turned those miscues into 10 points. SMSU led 6-3 early-on, but the Warriors went on a 16-4 run to pull away. WSU maintained a double-digit lead throughout the half and took a 43-35 lead at halftime.

Winona State didn't slow in the second half as the Warriors went 17 of 28 from the floor (60.7 percent). It was the first time an opponent shot more than 60 percent from the floor in a game versus the Mustangs since Nov. 9, 2012, versus No. 3 Pittsburg State.

Alison Nagel, who scored more than 17 points in each of the last five straight games, finished with 11 points on 4 of 5 shooting to lead SMSU. She has reached double-digit scoring in all nine games this season.

The Mustangs return home to the R/A Facility with a conference game versus Sioux Falls on Saturday.
